Those who Differ : Aliens
The most influential aliens in Known Space were the Anunnaki or "Ur", a race that died out before the fall of the Roman Empire on Terra. This race built the Jumpgates, the huge edifices that allow passage from one system to the next. Their ruins dot a dozen worlds and their artefacts are highly prized.
The Ur left behind two child races : The Ur-Obun and the Ur-Ukar, collectively known as the Ur-races.
Ur-Obun :
Humanoid, with a deeply spiritual culture. One of the Prophets disciples was an Ur-Obun, a fact not commonly acknowledged today.
Religious war with the Church decimated the Ur-Obun population and they are restricted almost exclusively to their homeworld within Hawkwood space.
The Ur-Obun enjoy better civil rights than most other aliens and are much valued as peacemakers and diplomats. Many of this race have Psionic or Theurgical talents.
Ur-Ukar :
Cousins to the Ur-Obun, the Ur-Ukar live below the surface of their hostile homeworld, locked in bitter interclan warfare. A bitter and often violent people, they are adapted to live in twilight and underground, making them efficient assassins and mercenaries. As with their Obun 'cousins' the Ukar are frequently born with occult talents (usually Psi).
Vorox :
Described as multilimbed monstrosities by many, a Vorox is a hexapedal mammalian creature descended from a pack hunter.
The Vorox homeworld is a violent place with a multitude of dangerous and venomous predators, Vorox came late to civilisation and civilised Vorox are a minority among their race.
Like most animals on Vorox, the Vorox themselves have poison claws, only de-clawed civilised Vorox are allowed off-world, although nobles may retain one. Vorox are carnivores and may walk on two, four or all six limbs with increasing levels of speed. Vorox are valued as shock troops and body guards, being intensely loyal.
The Vau :
Equal to the Second Republic in technology, this race lives on the fringes of Known Space and forbids further human expansion into their region. Once the Vau went to war over human interference in their space and it was to end this war that the Prophet made the final journey that was to claim his life.
In these dark times, Vau tech is highly prized and there is a black market in it, via those worlds that humans are allowed to share with the Vau. The Vau leaders have never been seen and the race as a whole is reclusive.
Symbiotes :
Shapeshifting, geigeresque nightmares from the edge of space. Symbiotes infiltrate planets eco-spheres and seek to wipe humanity from the cosmos. Symbiotes can take over any organism and are skilled in terrorism and subversion. An entire Imperial fleet has their region of space quarantined and has been able to finally halt their advance into Known Space. The planet Stigmata is the scene of a bloody ground war against these abominations. Recently rumours of bizarre and unholy new weapons being used by the Imperial and church forces have begun to circulate.
Gannok :
Natives of Bannockburn, Gannok are simian in appearance and frequently use their feet as secondary hands alongside their prehensile tails. Adept at mimicry, these creatures were not classified as sentient for some time after contact but have turned out to be a very technologically able species. Notorious for eating practically anything and eating a lot of it, their digestive system is scarily efficient. There is also no record of any Gannok being succesfully infected by a Symbiote.
Many Gannok have joined the League and a popular stereotype is that of the Gannok ship's engineer (their build is suited to squeezing through access tubes).
Etryi
Hailing from the planet Grail, these aliens resemble humanoid versions of the great birds of prey from Old Urth and are capable of flight.
Other Races :
There are a number of other, lesser known races in the Known worlds. These include : The insectoid Ascorbites of Severus and the equine Shantor.
G.M. Note : Ur-Obun, Ur-Ukar, Gannok, Vorox and Etryi are acceptible as player character races but only if the player is willing to take on board the problems associated with playing an alien in Fading Suns.
