Those Who Pray : The Church

The dominant religion in Known Space is PanCreationism, a religion that is very Judeo-Christian in its structure and doctrines, although elements of most of Old Holy Terras major Faiths can be found within it.
The key figure in the creed of the Church is "The Prophet" who lived during the period before the Second Republic and travelled Known Space with a band of disciples (one of whom, and the church overlooks this one, was an alien).
The Church believes, with some scriptural backing, that the desire for more and more technology is sinful and separates one from God, the fall of the Second Republic and the onset of the Fading Suns phenomenon has convinced them and the faithful that this is the case.
The Church seeks to stamp out perverse research and has proscribed many technologies as odious to humanity. Interestingly enough, the church still use a lot of the stuff.
The symbol of the church is a stylised Jump-Gate, for the Prophet was killed in a starship accident. There are five major sects within Holy Mother Church and the catch all category of Mendicants.

    Church Emblem

    The Urth Orthodox :
The largest part of the church, the Orthodoxy are also the most political and temporally concerned of the orders. Urth Orthodox do most of the work among the community, building churches, hospitals and the like. Authoritarian but concerned with the welfare of their flock. This sect has the largest popular following

    Brother Battle Emblem

    The Brothers Battle :
Quite simply - Warrior monks. Highly trained, utterly dedicated and very well equipped. Brother Battle Order troops are perhaps among the best in known space.

    Eskatonic Emblem

    The Eskatonic Order :
The most mystical of the mainstream Orders, the Eskatonics believe in seeking the divine spark within all beings and are practitioners of a religious form of Psionics called Theurgy. Seeking is important to this order and their love of occult secrets has got them into a lot of trouble with the inquisition in the past.

    Avestite Emblem

    Temple Avesti (Avestites) :
Dreaded inquisitors. The Avestites long ago seized most of the seats on the Inquisitorial Synod, and have since then made it their duty to search the Known Worlds for signs of heresy, demonism and any other threat to the faithful. Their illiteracy, fear of learning and dogmatic adherence to certain extreme scriptures makes them feared and hated throughout Human Space. But they are obeyed nonetheless. Only the most fanatic and ascetic initiates are admitted to this sect.

    Amalthean Emblem

    Sanctuary Aeon (Amaltheans) :
A healing order, their devotion to the well being of the peasantry has gained them an amazing reverence from the common people. When an Inquisitor tried to burn a famed Amalthean, the Amalthean had to restrain the crowd from hanging the Inquisitor for the Heresy of suggesting such a thing. A small order and one which demands selfless sacrifice from its members.

    Mendicant Monks (Hesychasts) :
Monks, hermits, cenobites and itinerant preachers. These have no political influence within the church as a whole but every now and again a visionary comes up from their ranks and makes others take notice.
