Those Who Trade: The Guilds of the Merchant League
The Second Republic was ruled by huge corporations and zaibatsu, when it fell and anarchy descended upon Known Space, the remnants of the ruling cartels banded together into the Guilds.
Five Guilds have pre-eminence within the League but there is so much internecine strife and sharp practice that any unity is rather superficial.
The League stubbornly maintains a large technological research program and given that it is the only major manufacturer of starships, it is hard for the Church to really stop them.
True to its roots, the League is republican and it is believed to wish to see the day when the nobles and church are swept aside and mankind can return to the glories of the Old republic.

The Charioteers :
This is the Guild of star pilots. They control interstellar trade and travel, owning most of the maps of the routes between the stars. Also believed to be the most Republican of the Guilds.

The Supreme Order of Engineers :
Researchers, Scientists and Heretics, this Guild pushes the bounds of science as fast as it can. Strangely enough, it used to be an order of the Church and both the League and the Church suspect something is going on here. Many members have cybernetic modification.

The Scravers Guild :
Widely regarded as a dodgy and criminal bunch, the scravers are the scavenger and salvagers Guild. Influential and officially squeaky clean, they do seem to have their fingers in a lot of murky pies.

The Muster (Chainers) :
This Guild ferries mercenaries, technicians, animals, foodstuffs and every other kind of live cargo around Known Space... including slaves. The labour guild for Freemen, this organisation makes its money filling labour needs. For menial labour, the Guild prefers to acquire slaves. Muster mercenaries are rather efficient and ruthless. The entire Guild is rather military in outlook.

The Reeves (Grey Faces) :
The banking Guild, they are also lawyers and judges. They make special effort to avoid controversy and too much attention. Some people say this Guild started out as Pirates (Don't say this to a Reeves' face.)
Minor Guilds
There are a myriad of smaller, more specialised Guilds. Some of these minor Guilds are purely local organisations, whereas others may be more widely distributed and filling a specialised niche. Examples include : The Town Criers Guild (media), The Guild of Courtesans (guess...) and The Morticians Guild.
