"Magic"The supernatural is very much part of 'Fading Suns'. There are indeed dark entities that dwell in darkness and there are those who would make pacts with them in return for unwholesome powers. Similarly, the Pancreator bestows upon the faithful certain abilities that appear miraculous in nature (known as 'Theurgy'). The disciplines of the mind have also found expression in the various psionic abilities manifest by some individuals. For quite obvious reasons, the Church is vehemently opposed to the worship or veneration of any entity but the Pancreator and reserves a special bile for those who worship the entities of the darkness (So-called Antinomists). Psychic powers and those that wield them are also not beloved of the Church, who see them as the product of perverse pre-Fall mental sciences. Unless a Psychic is under the protection of a noble House, a Guild or has thrown themselves on the mercy of the Church to become a sanctioned Psychic (or 'Penitent') then they are likely to be hunted down by the Inquisition. Even House or Guild protection does not ensure total immunity and a non-Penitent can expect constant harrassment from zealous church officials and the ever present possibility of a lynching by fearful peasants. The life of a Penitent is not an easy one, forced to wear a badge denoting their Pyschic status and to live a life of total obedience to the Orthodox clergy. All occultists, whether divine or psychic in nature will have some sort of occult stigma that marks them out as different. Thus it is that peasants will fear those with unusual features such as strange birthmarks, fearing it as a sign of occult taint. Those whose power derives from devotion to Pancreator will tend to have stigmas that resemble features from the gospels (Literal stigmata in some cases). All forms of occult power have their flip-side. Psychics who abuse their powers for self gain will awaken the dark side of their own natures which will begin to exert an influence on the Psychic's life. Those who use Theurgy for selfish reasons will be branded with hubris a taint that externalises the sins of the theurge.
