| Launched to coincide with the upcoming H band gigs www.thehband.com is well worth a look. The live album recorded at Dingwalls last summer is set to be released in early 2002, a sampler of which will be on sale at the January shows. I have also added some very interesting magazines to the Articles page, dating from 1989 and covering Steve joining Marillion. There is lots of europeans / how we live content, and some rarely seen pictures. Click here to go there now | ||||

The January 2002 edition of the drumming magazine 'Rhythm' has a great 4 page feature on Geoff Dugmore. There is a long interview (mainly about his vast session work), and lots of new photographs. Well worth a look !
|
| Geoff is still out on the road with The Waterboys, currently touring in Europe. Check out the 'Tour Bulletins' section of www.thewaterboys.com for a very entertaining guide to life on tour... The 'Brutal Beats' sample CD is in the top ten best sellers - see http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=TASCD-106... Geoff also has the unique honour of playing on four of the UK Top 20 albums this week, namely Gabrielle 'Dreams Can Come True', Rod Stewart ' The Story So Far', Natalie Imbruglia ' White Lilies Island', & Dido 'No Angel' - (itself the biggest selling album in the UK this year) | ||

h: "Ah, the perfect Christmas present.. Always a tricky decision.. Well, would you believe it? I'm coming to see you in the New Year with my extraordinary crew of geniusses! I have this week confirmed shows at two of my favourite venues, Paradiso Amsterdam (Friday, Jan 4th) and Cafe de la Danse Paris (Saturday, Jan 5th). I've just added a London show on Thursday 3rd January at The Mean Fiddler (LA2) Click here for ticket details.

| From September 20th through to December 9th, Geoff Dugmore will be on tour with 'The Waterboys', visiting the US, UK and Europe. Full tour details can be found at www.thewaterboys.com | ||

| I chatted with Colin Woore and Ferg Harper in the bar after the first Dingwalls show. Colin told me that there has been some progress on the re-issue of the Europeans albums. Not quite sure about the details, but news will be posted here as soon as I know more... Colin is currently recording demos for his own album and there is interest from major record companies... A 'pre-Hogarth' Europeans song called 'Don't Cry' has been covered by an artist in Japan, and is apparently getting airplay there... Ferg told me that he recognised the lyrics to 'Better Dreams' (from H's 'Ice Cream Genius' album and played during the gig). They were apparently inspired by Steve's first visit to LA with Europeans back in 1983... (see the Lyrics page for more info...) |
| Geoff Dugmore got in touch to tell
me that he couldn't attend the shows, as he was off to
Europe that week with 'The Waterboys'. Recent drumming
duties include the new 'Hear'say' (Popstars) single, and
album tracks with 'Cher', 'Mark Knopfler' and 'Bonnie'
Rait. Meanwhile, Steve Hogarth has posted a message on his official website (www.stevehogarth.com) suggesting that there may well be some festive 'h' band shows around Christmas time. The second leg Marillion's Anoraknophobia Tour has been announced, with autumn dates all over Europe. Marillion are to release a double A-side single 'Between Me & You' / 'Map of the World' exclusively through their website at http://www.marillion.com/single/index.html |

| The '2nd annual Evenings of Genius' will take place
at Dingwalls in Camden Town on the 8th
and 9th of August 2001. Tickets cost £15.00 each The first show (Wednesday August 8th) will be called 'SPIRIT' and (says Steve) "will concentrate on the more spiritual aspects of my music and will also feature additional songs from the other musicians. Dave has suggested one or two interesting XTC songs, Aziz will naturally contribute something, and perhaps something from Richard also. In addition, there'll be a handful of my favourite cover songs. I'm pleased to announce the addition of Stepahnie Sobey-Jones on cello and Dalbir Singh on tabla. We may even write something new to include in the shows." |
|
| The second night (Thursday August 9th)
has been christened 'BODY' and will "be
more of a stomp, concentrating on the rock'n'roll aspects
of my music plus songs from within the band as well as
the odd cover song. This set will probably resemble more
closely the h shows from the past, although there'll
obviously be music in there which we haven't performed
before." This year's 'h band' line up comprises Andy Gangadeen Drums, Dalbir Singh Tabla, Jingles Bass, Richard Barbieri Synthesizers, Stephanie Sobey-Jones Cello, Dave Gregory Guitar, Aziz Ibrahim Guitar, h Vocals etc... | Back in May, Jimmy Nail played the
Corn Exchange, here in Cambridge, as part of his UK tour.
I met up with the tour's musical director and drummer,
one Geoff Dugmore for a quick chat, and
a tour of backstage. Thanks to Geoff and all the crew for
making me feel so welcome. 'Sharon's Jimmy Nail' site at http://www.peverel.demon.co.uk/jn/jnrevsteve.htm
has a few tour photos and show reviews. This summer, Geoff is playing a number of big festival dates in Europe with The Waterboys, as well as more studio session work with (among others,) Ronan Keating and Natalie Imbruglia. |

| Marillion's latest offering has been very well promoted, and has gained some favourable reviews in the press. The band's website at www.marillion.com contains album information and reviews, plus pictures from the recent European tour. The two shows I saw (Hemel Hempstead and The Forum, London) were superb. With more dates announced for the Autumn, I would definitely recommend travelling to see the band this year. |

To tie in with the release of the new album 'Anoraknophobia' (in May), the Marillion website at www.marillion.com has been fully redesigned and updated. I would recommend giving the site a visit, particularly the 'Steve Hogarth' section that lists his Europeans, How We Live and Session work, along with his 'top ten' albums and lots of other info. There are sound clips from the new album too. |
|
| In March, I met up with Geoff Dugmore at his London
home for a cup of tea and a chat. I have now transcribed
most of the interview, adding lots of his recollections
to the 'Songs' and 'Tour History
/ Gigography' pages. The other half of the chat
will appear here soon (in some shape or form), including
more about his group 'Wildlife' and his
extensive 'session' work. Other Euros news... The Ian McNabb album produced by Geoff Dugmore has just been released here in the UK... Steve Hogarth's new 'Marillion' album 'Anoraknophobia' is released mid-May accompanied by a UK and European tour... There are rumours of more 'H' Band shows in 2001... Geoff Dugmore is touring the UK with Jimmy Nail's band in May |

Geoff Dugmore has very kindly lent me a number of his
Europeans videotapes, containing various promotional,
live and TV performances. These include two edits of the
infamous 'Animal Song' promo video, the
'Recognition' promo, 'Animal
Song' played live on the Old Grey Whistle Test,
a great clip of 'You Don't Want Me (In Your Life)
plus an interview from the Metropole in Berlin, and a
studio performance of 'Acid Rain' from a
French TV show. I'll post full information plus some
video-captures on the 'Videography' page in the future. Click here to see the cover of the Berlin Videotape (pictured left) |

| Many thanks to Fabien Locicero who sent me a tape of the Europeans on French radio from 1984. The session starts with a brief interview with all four band members. The DJ asks a lot of questions about their Scottish heritage, and the then current state of Scottish Pop Music which eventually prompts Steve Hogarth to admit that he is English ! There then follows exciting live versions of 'You Don't Want Me (In Your Life)' , 'American People', 'Acid Rain' and 'AEIOU' (although it cuts off half way into the song.) It is great to finally hear some 'Recurring Dreams' songs played live, as a change to the 'Vocabulary' tracks that are widely available on the 'Live' album, Sight & Sound broadcast and the Rockpalast video. 'You Don't Want Me...' has a great extended end section, with some particularly fine interplay between the euros. |
|
| "I've been in the studio working on the new Steve Winwood album, and I am currently doing a French artist. The new single from Rod Stewart is me, and the forthcoming album from Natalie Imbruglia is also me, although I have some work to finish on that. The Ian McNabb album I produced last year is coming out on the 23rd April on Castle Records - look out for that. Other than that, my sample CD is coming out at the end of the month on Best Service. I am also producing a new act called ED LIQ... sounds like Roxy Music meets Yazoo meets David Byrne." |

Over the past year I have collected a bucketload of previously unknown Europeans & How We Live tracks. These include demos, a live show and some rare b-sides. Click [HERE] for my full report, which I have called 'Record Round Up' |
|
| Steve Hogarth played with the H band once again, this time at the 'Tivoli', Utrecht in November. There were more line-up changes, including Pete Trewavas (from Marillion) covering for Jingles on Bass guitar. The band apparently played some more songs (mainly Beatles classics) at a small pub round the corner after the gig for a few lucky punters! |
|
| I managed to catch up with all four Europeans (including Ferg), in the Dingwalls bar after the first 'H' show. They all had lots to say, and some particularly exciting news. Click here to read all about the Euros in 2000 (again, with lots of pictures) |
|
| Steve Hogarth's recent shows in London were a real treat. Not only did the 'H' band play a blinder, but Colin Woore joined Steve on stage (prompting a brief re-union of How We Live) to play 'Working Town.' Click here to read my show review (with lots of pictures) |
|
| The 'Dry Land' album is now available to buy from http://www.marillion.com/discog/hwl/index.html . The two bonus tracks sit very well at the end of the album, and the CD inlay is a faithful reproduction of the original LP sleeve. Sadly the 'additional' notes are very brief, but the full lyrics are included. Buy it now, you won't be disappointed. |
|
| The Dry Land album is
(at last) to be reissued on 8th August 2000 !! The
official Marillion press release reads: "After years of requests, Racket Records is happy to announce that Steve Hogarth's pre-Marillion album 'Dry Land' by How We Live is soon available exclusively from Racket. In addition to additional notes from Steve and bandmate Colin Woore, two previously unreleased tracks are now included on this hard-to-find album!" |
| The two previously unreleased tracks are "Simon's
Car" and "You Don't Need Anyone"
recorded in late 1988. Extended 12" versions of
these songs are available to download in the 'Web Members
Area' at www.marillion.com. (with web fan club
membership password) Full details, with comments from
Steve and Colin can be found at http://www.marillion.com/discog/hwl/index.html "Now we have to try to do the same with Polygram who own the Euros' albums." says Colin Woore |
|
| "I'm recording a new album for Rod Stewart at the moment with Greg Alexander (New Radicals) and have just finished producing the new Ian McNabb album (Icicle Works) as well as cutting tracks for Nicola Charles (new artist on Mushroom records), Eric Rubin (big Mexican pop star) and Angela Baroldi (big Italian pop star.) I'm off to Japan for 3 months in October to tour there and the States with a big Japanese artist called 'Yazawa'." |
