Bagot Goat Breed Society History
In 1988 a number of Bagot breeders formed the Bagot Goat Study Group with the aim of increasing the profile of the Bagot breed because until this very little had been done to promote the Breed in any way. The Bagot goat has a unique place amongst all other goats because of its long history, however it is just about the least known.
The Bagot Goat Study Group converted to the Bagot Goat Breed Society in 1996 and from this point took on the job of goat registrations for its members. In 1999 all Bagot registrations were processed by the Society. The Society membership has risen steadily from its creation and is not confined to just Bagot breeders. Anybody with an interest in the Breed is welcome to join.
The group has about 70 members and is still rising so our members control well over 98% of all the registered Bagot goats alive to-day.
Members of the society are actively engaged in trying to document as much back history as can be done, coupled with obtaining as much old photographic evidence as can be found. The society has had a lot of help and encouragement from our Honorary President Lady Nancy Bagot, her vast knowledge being most helpful to us.
The society publishes a newsletter (the "Bagot Bugle") three times a year for members only. This is full of information, from the latest history finds to stock wanted or for sale. The society has also produced a Breed leaflet and a video.
A booklet titled "The Bagot Goat and its Long History" was published to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bagot Breed Society. Details on availability and cost of this booklet can be obtained from the Secretary of the Bagot Breed Society.
