St Chad

St ChadSt Chad lived nearly 1400 years ago and spent most of his life in the north of England. St Chad’s in Patchway is unusual in the south but there a lot more St Chad’s churches in the northern half of the country.

St Chad was born in Northumbria and was trained in the 7th century Christian community at Lindisfarne, an island off the Northumberland coast. He was made Bishop at York but humbly agreed to leave when another Bishop returned from France. St Chad travelled south, spreading the good news about Jesus wherever he went, and eventually became Bishop of Lichfield in Staffordshire where the cathedral is still dedicated to him. We at St Chad’s are pleased to serve in his tradition of humility and of spreading the good news.

This picture of St Chad being sent out on horseback by Archbishop Theodore was created recently by local artists and stands in the lobby of our church building.
