The Esplanade in Alicante

|
The summit of Mt. Benacantil was the place chosen by the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barcas for the construction of a fortress of great strategic importance, known by the Romans as Castrum Album (the White Fortress). Later, the fortress was to be turned into an Arab castle and afterwards the Castle of Santa Barbara, the bastion which still stands on the hilltop today Sporadically used as a penitentiary, the generals Prim, Torrijos and Serrano were kept there as political prisoners. At the feet of the castle, the ancient part of the town, with its narrow and often steeply climbing streets, is the home of most of the monumental buildings. We can find the Baroque architecture of the Town Hall, the magnificent collegiate church of St. Nicolas (17th Century), decorated in Rococo style, and the Gothic church of St. Maria with its Baroque facade. The buildings gradually slope downwards to the sea, where the much-famed Esplanade of Spain separates port from city. There is always atmosphere on the esplanade; some stroll beneath the palms, on the hypnotic colours of the pavings, others lounge on the terraces, sipping the typical orgeat. |
