CATERHAM PARKED UP BLIND ALLEY!
CUP
Caterham's
pack huffed and puffed against the much larger pack of Park, as Parks forwards
dominated this game until the final quarter were Caterham's young spirit
salvaged some pride with a last minute try by Ledwidge Senior.
Caterham
Started this game against a side with a similar record as themselves in the
league won none!! So something had to give.
At
the very first scrum on 5mins Caterham were ploughing a very deep furrow on
there home turf. But Caterham’s three quarter line of The Turney brothers and
Gee at halfback saw Caterham in the driving seat when they got the ball.
On
15 mins saw Cats first real opportunity to break Parks forward's hold on this
game, a sliced Clearance by Williams saw the quick thinking Turney break through
only for a handling error, due to Cats who were always under pressure in the
first half, when they got the ball the expectancy was to great as the pressure
by Parks forwards.
Then
on 28 mins Cats resolve was finally broken and an error saw Cats infringing, and
Park dispatching the penalty with ease.3-0
Then
with Park now struggling with the heat, and Cats seeming to be getting there
second wind, Parks full back punted an up and under only for Falkner to catch
superbly and Caterham recycling well and for a half break from Criscuollo, with
the try line beckoning, saw Park let off the hook by another error, by the Cats.
Caterham’s
defence was being examined and the only respite was some superb tackling by Vice
Captain Turney who turned the ball over on numerous occasions and with great
support from Mowatt and back row Wilden and Falkner saw Caterham get half
chances, which they could not convert.
When
Caterham backs did get the ball, which was not very often.
They
looked class.
The
inevitable happened on 38 mins quick ball by Park from a scrum on Caterhams
5metre saw it fed out wide for the winger top come through and score in the
corner, a last ditch tackle by Ledwidge could not prevent Caterham from
conceding before half time. 10-0.
The
second half on a sunny afternoon saw Cats work themselves in to a frenzy with
Lane and Radford and the quick thinking Stevens, driving at the Park pack and
with the game finally balanced saw again miss a chance to nick something, only
for a error again to prevent Caterham to advance, the cutting edge was missing
from Caterham's game.
Then
on 55mins saw the Park forwards again assume command and to add to the score,
with a well worked try in the corner.17-0.
Then
on 65 mins indiscipline again saw Park add to the score with a penalty for Cats
again not holding there game together, 20-0.
The
last 10 mins saw Park create another score and Caterham, when it was to late,
make the breakthrough with Park continually going offside and spoiling ball.
Ledwidge
taking a crash ball, with Cats forwards driving him on and taking a couple of
Parks players over the line with them.

Gameel
Thabet's unbeaten team were short of props for this local rivals clash so he
asked the Club chair to assist.
David
Stanley Cats Chair person, all 19 stone of him and at the ripe old age of 52
pulled on his shorts and played for a quarter as Caterham’s forwards in this
encounter created chance after chance.
A
superb display by Martin Baxindell at Flanker saw him assist in the scoring of
three of the trys, two by Max Summerskill.
Phil
Dockery again ran the show for Caterhams young guns.
The
best try of the game was created and finished by Paddy Westbury from a three
quarter move saw Westbury chip over the top of Woking's three quarter line just
out side Woking's 22 and chase through and catch and score under the posts.
Another come back after injury saw Cats Kevin Potter come back and play impressively for the final quarter, helping Caterham to another stunning win.

PRESSURE,
POINTS NO, PRIZES NO!
This
encounter for Caterham against there illustrious rivals Alleynians, who dropped
down a League last season, saw Caterham again let the opposition in, with the
difference between these two sides there NO8! Who scored a brace of tries the
first coming after 15 secs.
Caterham
with the wind against them and the hill saw the three-quarter line of Alleynians
rip through them again after 8mins to put Caterham 14-0 behind.
Caterham
conceded a further 3points after 12mins, to there defence after that Cats turned
ball over and for the remainder of the first half saw them in the ascendancy
with the line out superb and the scrums solid, but for all the pressure Cats
could not find a way through, with R AND R, Ronane and Radford putting the
Alleynians defence to the test. After a nick at the base of the scrum by Mowatt
on 28 mins, A chase by Wade Turney when a break down by Alleynians saw Paddy
Davey and Turney chase and the pace of Davey saw him pick up and break under the
posts for Cats.Caterham converted by Rees Williams.17-7
Caterham
with the momentum now saw effective play spoiled by misplaced passes and Offside
by Alleynians.
Two
breaks by Alleynians saw Cats Wade Turney thwart with great defensive play by
clearing Cats line.
Dave
Gee trying on 38 mins with a half break saw Caterham pile in and a recycle by
Mowatt, saw Caterham end the Half right up inside Alleynians half.
The
second half saw Cats go for the Jugular, as Alleynians seem to be struggling in
the loose, a quick recycled ball saw Cats backline came into action with Turney
chipping over the top. A chase by Ronane, Davey, and
Ledwidge
Saw Anthony Ledwidge beat them all to score his debut try, for Caterham 1st
team.Williams converted and Caterham were only 3points behind, this changed
after Alleynians went over the top again on 61mins and Williams dispatched the
Penalty with ease.17-17.
The
next ten minutes were crucial for Caterham and they put the defence of
Alleynians to the test,And with Mowatt plaguing his opposite no9 all game saw
Mowatt again showing Caterham a different dimension at the base of the scrum and
around the park, but on 70 mins saw a hack through,by Alleynians and a
controversial point as Caterham tackled there barn storming centre on the line
Cats tried to gain the ball from the tackled player but the Alleynian player
seemed to take an eternity to release, Cats protested and when it was recycled
Alleynians dived over, the referee giving the try and not penalising for not
releasing, 24-17.
Caterham
regrouped and on 75 mins a signal by the referee saw the advantage go to
Caterham, but the no8 of Alleynians picked up and ran 50 meres with Caterhams
defence in his wake, to score wide out right.29-17

14 MEN CATERHAM WELL AND TRULY BOOTED!!
Caterham were well
and truly booted into touch by Old Wells in there first League encounter, as
Cats started with 12 men, as totally disjointed Caterham were down 7-0 in just
30 secs. From the kick off there no 3 waltzed over the line. Caterham then got
their whole team on the pitch with 1 sub as back up, but after 20 mins THEY LOST
THEIR AWSOME Back row player Rippingale with concussion
They called on one
of Caterhams Golden oldies Simon Witham to assist as with 23 years of 1st
team rugby behind him, Witham had the experience to hold the Caterham pack
together but with the strain in the pack from Old Wells, getting and playing
better than Caterham in the loose,Cats lost Witham also, and were now down to 14
men.
Caterham versatile
Scrum half Mowatt played his part to try and stem the Wells attack, playing in 4
different positions, and for Skipper Ian Williams the task to keep the moral of
Caterham team up was a difficult one.3 more tries, quick and neat back play by
Wells saw them go in at half time 31-0 to the good.
Caterham front row
showed awesome resilience with Nick Paneth in his 51year was a rock with new 1st
Team Debutante Budgen brilliant in the loose in the second half. Some desperate
refereeing decisions saw Caterhams backs of Turney and Ansell and Baxindale get
more and more disillusioned. The first 20 mins of the second half saw Caterham
loose there Brilliant back row player Wilden who was sin binned for over zealous
play! The flood gates then opened with Wells getting another 31 points on the
board. But to there defence
Caterham backs and forward effort, from Versatile Wallis and Chapman was
Herculean, and they were instrumental in the final quarter as Caterham took the
game to the 15 men Wells with
Kenworthy just
missing out on a try and Gee getting tackled high by Wells, with the try line
beckoning.Caterham did not let Wells over there line which proved that Cats
resilience was still in abundance in the end.
15/9/01 Old Caterhamians XV 44 Dorking XV 20
As the new training regime of Ex Skipper Nick Ansell, and with the help and the Commitment Of Guest Coaches,John Perrin and Derrick White.Caterham are investing in the future to assist the new Youth policy at Cats, Which starts this Wednesday at Park Avenue at 7.30pm.Training will assist Caterham more and more with the ever growing belief that Caterham are on the brink of a new dawn with the brilliant youth of the likes of Ewan Turney, Tom Morrison,Sam Stanley, and Alex Rayment,Aaron, who has taken the Vice Captaincy behind Skipper for the second season,Ian Williams.
Caterham have been bringing in the youth as they did at the end of last season, but stalwarts Mike Ledwidge and Peter Beard And the experience Of Rob Howley saw Caterham play with 14 men,but who were assisted by the generosity of the Dorking to lend a player for 28 mins, until Dorking lost a player through injury, then Caterham went back down to 14 men but this seem to make CATS WORK HARDER!
The performance's of Mike Ledwidge at Second Row and The Brace of tries for the Gazelle like Howley saw the Cats take the game to the massive pack of Dorking.
Alex Rayment at scrum half saw a great deal of his no8s boots as the Cats pack was driven of the ball at the scrums, but to Cats credit, in other departments namely in the loose saw Delicata play a starring role with true aggression and skill to sniff an opening to give Caterham the edge at the half way mark.
Joe Butler on the wing saw the ball only briefly but when he did, was fed by Hathaway on one occasion, and broke to score the second of two great tries as he out witted his opposite number.
Madsen at Hooker was also the difference in the loose, turning ball over and tackling with the passion of a man with a mission.
The high light of the game was a superb piece of individual skill from Dockery,at half back as the game was finally balanced a great diagonal ball kicked to the corner saw prop Howley sprint in pursuit and catch and dive over the line for a brilliant finish to a well worked move!
Crowborough
48 Old Caterhamians 10
Caterham
struggled for 50 mins of this match as their Sussex Division1, counterparts out
played Cats. For the final 30 mins Caterham resolve finally broke.
John
Ronane and Chris Mowatt tried to stop the floodgates but only some neat work by
Alex Glover and new draught Phil Mukasa saw Caterham stave off the final and
inevitable result!
Caterham
did use some of their new blood to effect as to get them use to the speed and
pace of 1st team rugby at this level. The gap is being closed week by
week but more games will benefit the new breed in the end!
8/9/01 Old Cats 8 Old Elthamians 7
Old Elthamanians hail from from Kent Div one.
Again Mr Nick Ansell stormed in to nick the game from There Kent counter
parts.in a close contest Alex Rippingale went of with a recurring injury but
Mowatt played like a 18 year old
Special mention for Edward Chapman as Cats are struggling for props and
Edward whom had not proped for a few seasons had a stormer, controlling the
front row with great dignity

Seriously Injured Player's Day
Old Caterhamians All Stars 37
Marlow All Stars 5
Over 350 people turned up to watch an
entertaining game of Minis rugby and senior rugby at Park Avenue at Caterham on
Sunday
As this was a friendly and the aim of
the day was to raise funds for the Jim Upton Trust and Caterham's Seriously
Injured players Fund, the result was not reflected in the Commitment, of Jim
Upton’s two Former Clubs he Played for, was immense.
Former International Jeff Probyn who
played an outstanding game for cats as it spurred the likes of Ex Navy Player
Lionel Perks to score one sensational try breaking from his own 22 and beating
Four Marlow players in the process.
Jeff played with great dignity and his
various skills were shown not only in the pack but also in the backs where he
got on the score sheet as well!
Martin
Baxendale, himself seriously
injured 8 years ago, bouncing back and having a storming game at scrum half and
getting in on the score sheet with a typical scrum half try, sniffing his
opposite number out and nicking in the corner.
Ex marine officer and Former Old Cats
skipper Nick Ansell had a good game breaking the defence of Marlow on various
occasions and dynamic tackling by John Ronane, another Ex Captain saw Caterham
in the ascendancy.
Old boys Keith Slater and Mike Garland
had a run out and played there part well.
The average age on Caterham’s side
was 44 as opposed to Marlow's 46!!
Mark Rowlands, a stalwart for Caterham
for Many Years, nicked in when Probyn set him up on the blind side after some
excellent work from Everard.
International Referees David Mew and
Rob Dickson helped the game flow and their services were an added bonus to the
day as well.
Barry Myland who co-ordinated the whole
day said "It has been a fantastic day for the fans of rugby and the
community and they have helped us raise with the aid of Marlow over £9,000
which is truly amazing!"
Old
Caterhamians 7s Easter Weekend
Weather was nearly the winner on Saturday but the Blood and Guts of Sevens Rugby was the Real winner with some great Southern Hemisphere rugby to College sides coming along for a laugh and a beer.
Warlingham were one of the favourites as were a side from Fiji calling them selves Pacific. Shirley Wanderers turned out a side Old cats had three sides including their Colts, Haywards Heath put two out as well. Warlingham and Mid Wives Colts joined ranks to turn a side out called Midwarls.Midwives also put aside out
Exeter College came up, as did Crawley for the tournament.
Old Cats Senior side were knocked out by Eventual finalists UCC,in the Quarters.
London Irish Amateurs had ago and the best game of the day against Pacific, Irish, winning a titanic battle with 3 trys to one. The pace of the Pacific team was blistering but great covering by Irish and playing sevens the containment way, the chances came for the Irish and they took them.Irish lost to University College Colchester in the semis.
The surprise package in the plate and the Main was Old Cats
b and In the Main, Halwyn Jetstars.Big Andy Ripley who was Englands no8 in the
70/80s was there also supporting his son Marcus who plays For Halwyn, Andy said
"All the Guys here are a scratch team, They originate from a Holiday home
that all 10 players went to when they were younger and they have remained
friends ever since, Andy also mentioned "The hardest game so far was
against UCC who we meet in the final it will be a tough one"
Halwyn Captained by Dave Starling, they won the Final with
a penalty in the last minute, both sides were shattered and 8-5 does not reflect
the effort both sides put in.
Old Cats "Bs" got to the final of the plate after
another awesome display by Mike Ledwidge who has played 7s up at Caterham for25
years .In the Semi final Cats Played Midwarls and it was 5-5 and went into
injury time, sudden death but Tom Morrison Came up trumps with a burst to the
line just out outside the 22 taking two of the Midwarls players with him.
The Final Caterham dug deep and had to play Effingham and Leatherhead, Again a Barging Ledwidge Try and Paul Bryant's blistering pace caused havoc and a solo try from the young scrum half seemed to have sealed it for Cats but Effs came back with two trys and they, who had a tough journey to the final as well, were tired as well as Cats.
Mistakes were being made but the Cats came back to score, a
conversion would have nicked it but it was not to be, the ball hitting the
upright and bouncing out.
Injury time loomed and again it was going to be sudden
death Caterham won the toss and played down hill.So the advantage was in cats
favour this time. Tom Morrison again broke just outside the 22 after a line out
this time Effs tackled Morrison but great support play by John Johnson saw him
take the ball over the line for the winning try, both sides played to there last
drop of sweat.
Old
Caterhamians Chair Dave Stanley said in the closing presentations that "It
was a bad day for weather but I must thank the Teams, the Referees and all the
support OF THE PEOPLE TURNING UP TODAY, especially St Johns Ambulance, and a
special mention for the Caterham School ground Staff to get the pitches playable
for this Our 40th Anniversary Tournament, An last but not no means

successful weekend the previous week, Winning the Easter Sevens plate, it
continued with the youngsters of the 2/and 3rd teams and with a
mixture of senior players,John Ronane,Mike Ledwidge and Simon Lane saw them
helping the junior players with a great result. But with a Warlingham player
being taken to hospital with a broken arm, the game was nearly abandoned, but
both skippers agreeing to continue, and it was all out attacking game with both

Warlingham were short so Peter Beard stalwart Prop for Cats for29 years, donned a Warlingham Shirt and played his part as did Gameel Thabet who helped out for a period, yet another Cats player mucking in with there Local rivals
Caterhams first try coming on 18 mins with a great break by Turney and support by Johnson seeing Caterham scoring in the corner.
The second Caterham try coming from a spoilt ball from a Warlingham lineout Aaron Stevens and Ronane and Lane driving the ball on inter play between backs saw the ball recycled for Ledwidge to crash over the line 10-0.
Warlingham were putting Caterham on the back foot but superb Tackling and Defensive kicking by Ledwidge saw Cats put Warlingham XV Deep in there 22.
With continual infringing a touch of class from Turney spinning round and attempting an outrageous drop goal attempt from 28metres just missing to the left.
Then with Davey going of with ligament damage to his
leg,the back row looked like it would be under scrutiny. But his replacement
Delicata was awesome he took the game to Warlingham who were now looking a bit
tired, but then on 38mins the Warlingham player who landed awkwardly, sustaining
a broken arm, the game was halted, but after consultation both sides carried on.

WINNERS
OF THE LONDON SCOTTISH 10s COLTS
TOURNAMENT 2001
A high calibre rugby Tournament saw Caterham, play in London Scottish 10s Tournament on Sunday at Richmond Athletic Ground.
Caterham took 10 players away for this prestigious Competition, so subs were going to be a problem if any injuries occurred.
In the first round Caterham beat local rivals Warlingham in
a fiercely contested first round encounter, but Cats young blood took the game
19-5.Battison playing superbly and Captain Turney the youngest player on show,
lead from the front.
In the second round Old Cats were playing University
Vandals and a starring performance from Paul Bryant saw Cats win a close
encounter 20-12.Yet again Alex Rayment nicking a try to seal the game. The
competition was not a round robin you had to win your games to get to the final.
The 3rd round Old Cats had to play a very
accomplished side in Twickenham, Cats beating Twicks 3years ago, could they do
it again? They did, winning with Rayment Scoring and Cats running out winners
32-12,
An injury to Ian Battison saw Cats down to 9men and a place in the Final against, The organisers' home side London Scottish. This was a great achievement. But a special thankyou at this, Amateur level must be given to our neighbours, Warlingham who lent Cats two players so Caterham could compete in the final.
A slow start but Cats took the game to their Hosts and with Warlingham supplying Dan Street up front who scored an amazing try for Caterham for Cats to win there second tournament in a row
24-12.Caterhams Colts manager Mike Rayment said "It
was a magnificent performance by the young Cats against such quality opposition,
but this is showing that Caterham is going to have a bright future with these
guys coming through."

In the previous encounter between these
two teams Caterham started of slowly and got better but this time Wals started
of well and continued with there no.7 Guy Nicholls superb in the loose and
creating havoc all over Caterhams home ground of Park Avenue.Again the
refereeing was not clear and in some cases were the old rules came to the
surface and the Wals pack played it to the wire.On 12 mins Wals first sortie
into the Caterham Half after some fierce opening
exchanges, saw them take the lead in the corner 7-0.
Caterhams frustration continued were
not sufficient support from the Cats defence saw 3 pens given away in quick
succession. The superb Kicking of the no15.Caterham were huffing and puffing but
it was a game to far For Ian Williams and His Side the Disruption and Bad
weather has taken its toll on all of Surreys Sides. On 28 mins confusion on the
line between Wals backline saw Ansell pop up to feed Faulkner who scored under
the posts, there seemed light then but Wals shut out Caterham And Dockery,
Everard and Ansell and Turney, could not find the spark to ignite the Cats game.
Some hard work, by in your Face Wilden who was sin binned for over zealous play.
Ronane was coming up in times and supported by Davey they give it there all. The
superb Faulkner was in everything good that Cats did and, With half time
approaching Caterham let Wals in again for a penalty.
The second half again Cats let Wals in
for a storming try from the no7 For Wals.Caterham then lost there rock at the
back Pizzey with a dislocated Shoulder, Being replaced by Gee who in the first
game was Wals Tormentor. Then a break by Faulkner and inter play between Backs
And forwards and great Support from Everard saw Wals infringe and Caterham score
Through The ferocious Mowatt. Cats not firing but were hanging on, but Wals
created another Chance and put it away with ease. Caterham came back and line
outs were just working. With 5mins remaining a cross field ball by Dockery saw
Moule ground the ball over the line, the try was disallowed for not in control of
the ball.Caterham heads went down but they are not out.
Skipper Ian Williams and Stalwarts
Lloyd Everard, Nick Ansell were very down at the end of along League campaign,
no fruits at the end. But survival in Surrey One is still a Possibility.
Caterham played well in phases throughout the season but need more consistency
this, Caterham feel will come over a period of time. Remember it is still a

these three quarters.I actually played for a club 15 with Mr Rippingale when

believe it, ME, Monsieur Crumpo scored the last try!!! One of my claims to fame!
2nd Team did not fair that well against a bad tempered Warlingham ,There

TIFFIANS 12 OLD CATERHAMIANS 7
With the continuing demand on the amateur status of the game at this level. The Surrey league asked for a League game to be played on a Sunday after a International, which really could have been programmed in on a friendly Saturday w/end. Cats got a side out and so did tiffs but really Caterham looked like they still at Twickenham West Car Park!! Early pressure from cats for 5mins a missed penalty, and really only Ronane at back row kept Cats in with a shout.Missed tackles and poor positional play saw cats give away a 20 min try from Tiffs in the Corner and superbly converted by Tiffs Kicker from the touch line7-0.Continually Cats were infringing and some Excellent Refereeing from Caterhams and Tiffs First Lady Official. It looked bad for cats when they lost There Experienced Back row of Rippingale, who was replaced by Radford. The second half saw a much improved Cats and some great play in the loose from Radford and Ronane saw cats play some good Rugby which they are known for at this level.Backs Faulkner and Gee and Everard were Excellent in turning Cats Forward play into Territory for Caterham to Camp in Tiffs 22metre line. But a break through from Tiffs saw Tiffs get there first chance of the second half ,a penalty the kick was taken and skewed wide towards the touch line only again bad covering by cats and an alert Tiffs attacker saw Tiffs score again 12-0.Caterham came out again putting continual pressure on Tiffs with the line out just about working with Wilden and Lawrence doing well. Finally Caterham were rewarded by, the Ever present Everard who was fed via Gee and Mowatt,to score to put Cats back in line for a comeback ,Pizzey converted.12-7.Now Caterham were everywhere and with fresh legs with the return ofAaron Stevens caterham pushed and prodded but to no avail.Caterham left it to late with possibly a Saturday game and more sleep Caterham may well have nicked it at the Death but it was not to be.

Saturday.Sunday was a good day for Hat trick try scorer/poacher Stephen Myland a
superb display by ex Old cat mini proving that with Richard Hathaway having an
excellent game at second row, that the Youth policy at cats is working! With an
early lead through a penalty from Richard Moule The Cats pack were making Effs
go offside and infringe constantly. Then on 15 mins Stephen Myland, after superb
retention of the ball by the cats pack broke to record his first try in the
corner At half time Caterham had a 8-0 nil lead. The second half saw honours even
for a short period then a flash of brilliance by scrum half By the impressive
Paul Bryant saw Myland again go over in the corner,13-0.Then the best was saved
till last from cats own 22metre line saw Myland turn on the power and beat three
men down the wing to round it off and score under the posts and the easiest of
conversions by Moule 20-0.
Then
Caterham went to sleep An up and under from Effingham saw the full back from
cats drop and the Effs no10 stole in and score 20-7.Cats were now on the

A
brilliant advert for colts rugby saw Caterham
take their illustrious rivals very close, Missed penalties to start with but
some fantastic running rugby by both sides, saw Mids take the early initiative
with a try then for cats to put 2 penalties over to lead. Caterham pack had the
upper hand with no8 Tom Morrison and Scrum Half Paul Bryant superb in the loose
and with the three quarters lead by Wade Turney, ripping holes in Mids defence
things were looking good for Cats. Then just before Half time Mids gave Caterham
it back with interest Scoring just to the left of the posts.12-6
The
second half saw another great display fully committed by both sides but Mids
scored again and it looked all over 19-6

could not convert the try which would have won it for Caterham.19-18.With 2mins
remaining Caterham had a penalty just outside the 22, Battison hit it hard but
just fell short.Agreat effort from Old Cats, and a fantastic looking future with

CATERHAM 10 WHITGIFT
44
Just as they were about to kick
off the heavens opened and that was it a quagmire, the conditions were
horrendous. The game was not a spectacle but Whitgift played the conditions much
better than Cats and there high ball into Cats 22 did most of the damage as
pressure was put on the Cats line from the off. The no9 of whits was a
experienced campaigner and did not let Mowatt a sniff at the scrums which were
well even. There was knockons, players slipping all over the place line outs
were a lottery, but Caterham grabbed hold of Whits shirt tales and hung on till
the just before the end of the first half and Whits powered there way to a win
which they deserved. Caterham first half saw pressure from Whits and the
pressure told after ten minutes with a missed clearance by cats and Whitgift
took full advantage and scored in the corner.5-0. Straight from the kick off
Whits again took the high ball tactic and it paid off with another try and
Caterham were now rocked back 10-0.Then whits were playing good wet rugby,
keeping it in the forwards. Whits no7 was Outstanding as well as Cats no7 Ronane,
they both battled well in conditions that would have been not out of place in a
scene from The Battle of the Somme.Caterham were penalised on 25mins for
continually infringing. Penalty was converted by Whits no10.13-0
Caterham then put a massive
response in and pinned whits in and a well taken try from Everard which gave
Cats a great boost.13-5.Then Whits came again and another mistake at the back
saw Whitgift score again 18-5.
Caterham then with minutes to
half time saw Whitgift again in the rain, pour down on Cats and score to make it
along way back for cats.23-5.
The second half saw Wilden, Lawrence, Walkden, Davey, and the never say
die Ronane took the game to whits and some great clearing by the Whits back
line, gave Whits breathing space. But a scrum just outside Caterhams 22 saw the
ball squirt out the side of the scrum and the Whitgift Flanker picked up and
scored a opportunist try 28-5.Then Caterham let Whitgift in again for another
try which it seemed that Caterham were heading for a heavy defeat and Whits a
large score! 37-5But Caterham did there spirits and there supporters a world of
good and for a period of Caterham pressure lasting 20 mins saw Caterham batter
Whits line and some excellent defending by whits. Kept Caterham at bay but
continual infringing From Whits saw Cats score a try to the right of the posts
and Fly Half Phil Dockery instrumental in cats Mini fight back Got the
points.37-10.Caterham Made a couple of Substutions Mark Dockery and Pete Radford
and with the new drive it made a lot of difference to Caterhams unit play.
Caterham again kept going and
again put Whits back in their 22.But quick thinking from a spilled Caterham ball
saw Whits clear up field and with minutes remaining Caterham were penalised and
from the resulting set play a chip and chase from the Whits no7 saw another
result of bad conditions and neat Rugby enable The Whitgifts no7 to score under
the posts.44-10.
Whitgift were a much more
organised team and really Caterham have really got to organise there play better
to be able to play the likes of Whitgift and stay on par with a well the Likes
Whitgift in This League.

OLD CATERHAMIANS 7 FARNHAM 25
Returning to league action after the England International against Australia, leaving Cats only to turn out a A XV the previous week, due to Twickenham bars having the entire First XV!!It was back to business, but after the first 20 mins it looked like Cats should have stayed there!!13-0 DOWN.The conditions were awful the pitch was waterlogged it was a nightmare, knock- ons, mistakes every were for both sides trying to get to grips with the elements, The larger pack by far, Farnham had early control some great tackling by Junior Ledwidge, on the wing saw, Him taking a leaf out of his Fathers book, Mike Has Played For Cats for over25years and with The combined total age of the first team Back row of 1O5!! DAVEY/ HOLCOMBE/ LEDWIDGE,In this particular game, It makes it all remarkable that Cats can still call on the Vets, in their hour of need. The normally reliable scrummaging of Cats found it hard against an excellent Farnham Pack, in the first half. Chris Mowatt, Cats ever present Scrum Half, was Man The Match by the way he dug the ball out of the back of the scrums, as Caterham were going back wards, and his defensive kicking and all round tackling in horrendous conditions, This new Half back pairing of MOWATT AND DUNNETT,LOOKS PROMISING,even in such conditions!!With the end of the first half approaching Cats were clawing there way back from the edge of what could have been a humiliating defeat,Cats camped in there own 22 were holding,a break by Cats saw them down in Farnhams 22 only for, Farnham to attack with gusto, scoring a soft try to the left of Cats posts,20-0 Half Time.
Cats came out and really give it a go Line out and Scrumagging was now working with a plomb!!They were tackling and going forward with Cats smaller pack getting the upper hand.A Great break By Half back Dunnett saw the Cats centres cut a hole through Farnham's defence Ledwidge Senior taking the pop ball and knocking over 3 of Farnham's, defenders to taking the ball over the line and turning over and touching down, the referee not up with play arrived not giving the try due to a Farnham hand under the ball,Cats were fuming. They then stepped up another gear in a great passage of play saw Cats forwards again driving their larger opponents of the ball and a superb First try for the club for Max Forster who drove over the line in the corner!!20-5,From a tight angle Ledwidge Converted 20-7.
Caterham now could see a chink in Farnham's armour, and from the kick off Cats forwards were getting a rhythm and 3/4/5 phase rugby again was happening. Farnham were feeding of scraps and Cats defence was again superb, with minutes only remaining, a moment in the match which saw the differences between the two sides,Cats defence And survival instinct, and Farnham's resilience to get something out of nothing.Farnham broke out of defence and with the try line beckoning a Great double hit from Junior Ledwidge and Senior Ledwidge saw the Farnham player knocked Backwards, but good support play by Farnham saw them score in the corner,25-7. But last season saw Cats Hammered by 50 odd points, But Caterham to there defence Won the second half 7-5.The side is improving slowly every week. Cats next League game is in 2 weeks time away at Old Cranleighians
PRESIDENTS XV 24 OLD CATERHAMIANS 10
A yearly encounter on Remembrance Sunday, which sees an invited Barbarian type team from previous Caterham masters and Ex Caterham school pupils taking on the present Old Cats first 15.
They play for The Jackson Memorial, which is presented to the winners of the game By Mrs E Jackson. It was named after Simon Jackson, her son, who died in a tragic accident, The Jackson family donating the award, for the game.
It was a beautiful autumnal afternoon and the pitch
perfect, saw caterham take the game to there invited guests, Penaltys were
missed by both sides, Dockery for Cats and DuToit for the Presidents. Rob Howley
from Caterham and Rob Harding for the Presidents came head to head in the
Scrums, Harding having had spells at Leicester and Roslyn Park, and in the end
the Caterham prop having the better! Two penalty's in succession saw the
presidents take control, but Caterham gave it there all, driving through and
only desperate defending by the Presidents xv kept Cats out, but when Caterham
were awarded a penalty on the 5 metre a quick thinking Dockery tapped and went
and scoring and converting Putting Caterham in control.7-6.
The game then became a Middle Park Game, most of the play being played either side of each others 22Metre line!
Cats and the Presidents exchanged penalty's Caterham
leading 10-9. Then two turning points the first, Caterham losing there Open Side
Flanker Rippingale with cracked ribs, and the second was when Harding the prop
went off with a head injury, this making a problem for Presidents XV, they not
having a replacement prop, had to put on a second row Harriott, this resulting
in uncontested scrums! The Cats were looking dangerous and with Both
Ledwidges,Putting some great tackles in,And Mark Dockery and Andy Davey CAUSING
HAVOCK IN THE LOOSE,Caterham then seemed to go to sleep and with a few subs
exchanged by both sides,The Presidents XV were getting the upper hand and Two
tries in the last 8mins saw Caterham go down Valiantly,Skipper for The
Presidents Julian Gilding and Ian Williams For Caterham, could be proud of there
teams, a hard fought game in the end and in places very entertaining For the 200
Spectators!

K.C.S 32 OLD CATERHAMIANS 12
In conditions suited to forward rugby it looked good for Old Cats superb pack, conditions wet, windy, and ball greasy.all the right signs, but unfortunately the KCS THREE QUARTER LINE, didn’t read the script!
In the first five minutes Cats were down an unconverted try,
And with a few decisions going against them when they looked like they were getting back into the game, it snow balled against them, with brief forays into the opposition half and some great tactical kicking by Phil Dockery, a penalty was awarded to Cats just inside the KC's 22,with conditions getting worse Dockery's kick drifted wide. This seemed to lift Cats and from the resulting drop out Cats gained possession, and the Cats pack drove Kcs pack to within five metres of there line, the ball was released to Cats three quarters, who with a overlap and with the try line beckoning knocked on.
Kcs from the scrum attacked from inside there own 22 and bringing their fullback into the line, and with Cats normally resilient defending letting them down, Kcs scored in the corner, 12-0 to Kcs after 25mins.Cats in phases actually had the better line out and the scrums With Walkden and Wealdon the only shining lights in the set play. Wallis in the loose yet again kept the line intact and the feeling was if Cats could get to half time with no more scores against the elements would be more in Cats favour in the second half, but into injury time in the first half the backs of Kcs ripped a hole through Cats three quarter line and with a pop pass after drawing Cats last man, the Kcs winger touching down in the corner. Half time17-0 to Kcs.
Cats really needed a break but alas the platform which was given by the Cats Scrum was not being used, thus handling errors and good work by Kcs saw Cats concede yet another try, due to the referee not bringing the infringement back to the 5 metre line and this would have given Cats half a chance to defend it,Kcs tapped and went over.22-0.
Cats were hanging on, the referee was missing small errors, which were frustrating Caterham, and yet another handling error saw Kcs go over for a try, 29-0.The heads were down but a great break by Turney at fullback and support play by Rippingale and continual offside by Kcs saw Cats get within 5 metres of Kcs line a pick up and drive saw Cats influential Flanker Rippingale go over for Cats first score with 15 to go.Dockery converted 29-7.Straight from the Kick off Cats gave a penalty away and Kcs slotted over32-7.
Cats came again and the scrums were pressurising Kcs at will and with the line at Cats mercy another try for Cats with Turney starring.Cats came up against a better organised three quarter line, and it goes without saying that there has not been a better set of backs yet, as good as KCS, that Caterham have met.

IRONSIDES XV 10
Old rivals for nearly ten years saw the friendship restoredon Saturday when OldCats second string took on Ironsides at park avenue. With the new laws on the front row positions very clear this encounter would have been a farce if it wasn’t for Peter Beard 25 years playing for Cats he offered to play for the opposition, due to ironsides not having a prop, thus scrums would have been uncontested, but stalwart Pete Beard said " IT is a great shame that the laws are that way,but I didn’t mind pulling on the shirt for the opposition at least we had a proper game"Skipper Andy Holcombe had a storming second half at the back of the scrum for Cats and from 10 nil down from half time Cats Scored a great try by Debutante Scrum Half Paul Bryant saw the hard work by Cats nearly nick a draw with Paddy Westbury and Mike Ledwidge going close. But alas it wasn’t to be.A great Gesture by Skippers from both sides Award Pete Beard with Man Of the Match with a pint of Lager AND A SET OF GOLDEN BOOTS, which had the club house in uproar, a great stalwart Peter Beard and was clearly taken back by all the fuss!
OLD SHOOTERHILLIANS 13 OLD CATERHAMIANS 8
An old boy encounter which had both sides taking a break
from league duty, old Cats started with a starring performance from Andy
kenworthy on the wing he put some great tackles in against his larger opposite
number and scoring a great breakaway try in the process, old Cats seemed
hungover from there previous weeks performance against Woking. The scrummaging
was poor and really there opposition were that yard quicker to the break
down,Old Cats to there defence hanging on to there lead was a struggle but great
movement from the set scrum saw Old Shooters score twice to regain the
initiative and take the game to Cats. With the conditions the long grass slippy
lots of handling errors by both sides. The second half saw some good marshalling
by Inspiration Skipper Ian Williams back
from his holidays in the Caribbean to help Cats gain a bit of momentum but the
only reward was Old Shooters going of side and Cats Half Back Phil Dockery
slotting over a Penalty to get within 2 points of there opposition.By now old Cats
were getting no reward only great defence from Rippingale , Wealdon and Falkner saw
Cats in with a chance to nick something out of a very dour game. But
it was not to be as Cats infringed on one to many occasions and Old Shooters
Took the three points and in the end just edged the game.

After the Vice Presidents lunch which saw Caterham getting the League Referees award for the Third time in 5 Years,
It could not get better, could it?? 35 SECONDS GONE and Caterham 7.0 up, from the kick off old Cats caught the ball recycled through mowatt, and a pass from Mark Dockery to Lloyd Everard saw him go over under the posts, the try converted by Phil Dockery, Caterham then built taking the game to there League rivals Woking.Woking were getting turned over in the loose and in the line out ,ex rugby league player from the southern hemisphere Rob Howley, who changed codes 4 years ago and joined Caterham at the beginning of October, playing in the front row for Cats, has given Cats another dimension, his arrow like throwing in at the line out has given the second row of Mark Walkden and Geoff Lawrence total domination in the line out,and it showed again against Woking.Every scrum Pete Radford at no8 and Chris Mowatt at Scrum Half made Woking uncomfortable and could not get started but after 15 mins of Cats pressure Caterham then made mistakes which gave Woking a chance a passage of play which saw great tackling from Man of the Match Max Forster and Mark Wallace, but a penalty awarded to Woking through Caterham going offside gave Woking a chance to get back into the game but there no10 missing to the left of the posts,Cats then started again to dominate this resulting in Woking in desperate defending in hacking clear on numerous occasions,Caterham then running the ball back at them through great breaks from Hockley Smith and Criscuolo, but continual offside by Woking saw Phil Dockery slot over a penalty on 28 mins 10.0 Caterham.Caterham had the game by the scruff of the neck but deep down knowing the quality of Woking and not beating Woking in the league for over 5 Years, possibley made Caterham too cautious! An attempted drop goal By Dockery just failed to clear the bar. With the conditions deteriorating with the wind gusting, and the ground cutting up,all Caterhams possession should have had more rewards but with3mins to go till half time,Caterham breaking through again saw Woking going offside,to deny Caterham of a try, Stand in Skipper Mowatt instructing Dockery to take the 3 points, Half Time 13-0.
The Second half saw Woking getting there second wind, for
15 mins Woking bombarded Cats line but great tackling By Ex Surrey under 18s
Star Alex Rippingale, and Simon Lane, saw the Caterham pack once again come
through and camp in Wokings 22.Eventually Cats were awarded yet another Penalty
which with swirling wind made it not easy saw Dockery just miss to the left of
the posts. Woking with 10 mins to go did not look like scoring and it that’s
how it ended with Caterham in the ascendancy good result for Caterham to take a

A game played in damp conditions it looked like a forwards day but it ended with the no9 from old Cats, Chris Mowatt and the no 10 from Kingston having the final say. Straight from the kick off Kingston took the game to the Cats within 5mins Cats gave a penalty on half way but Kingston could not convert, but straight from the 22 drop out Kingston came back catching caterhamians napping and scoring in the corner a soft try to concede in the circumstances, Kingston converted leading 7-0. Great defence and line out domination in the first half hour from Cats kept them in the game, Cats pressure told 4times in a ten minute spell with the Referee not allowing 3 trys on the grounds that he ball was held up over the line Criscuollo being the unlucky party on two occasions the last Being Rob Howley, who bulldozed his way through for all his efforts unfortunately in vain, harsh decisions by the unsited referee, even the Kingston Supporters were a little bemused!!The pressure finally took its toll on Kingston and Cats were rewarded with A great forwards try Walkden dominating the line out caught from a throw from howley the pack drove over the22 and recycled through mowatt a great half break by Senior Ledwidge saw him go over the line for a neat try, to the left of the posts, he then dually converted to draw level, with Kingston. Then Cats turned the screw and with in 3mins handling error from Kingston saw Ledwidge hack through and this time Falkner was on hand to apply down ward pressure to take Cats into the lead!! 12-7. Caterham in the second half were set up to take complete control but loosing Walkden at second row, after 46mins saw Caterham loose control and Caterham were not getting the50/50 balls not taking there own line out ball, Caterham were hanging on for 15mins,then when it looked like they had weathered the storm, a turn over at a ruck saw Kingstons three quarter line take Cats on the back foot and score in the corner 12-12 Now it was a free for all Ledwidge Junior coming on, as a replacement and making a great impression as Senior Ledwidge did and still does after over 20 years service with Cats !With only the scrums working for Caterham with Chris Mowatt and Pete Radford at the base controllingKingston and making there opposite numbers give penalties away at will!Caterham could not capitalise and with no time left on the clock and deep into injury time,a scrum just outside the Kingston 22 , a clean hook by Kingston saw the ball fed to there fly half who scuffed a drop goal, for which there was no time left for Cats to respond!
Caterham huffed and puffed but on the day it was not enough, WITH WOKING BEING Caterhams next opponents improvement will be needed, IN SURREY ONE this coming Saturday at PARK AVENUE KICK OFF 2.30PM A VICE PRESIDENTS LUNCH PROCEEDS THE GAME WITH 60 EX PLAYERS AND LOCAL BUSINESS PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT THE CLUB WITH GREAT ENTHUSIASISM, and the club will be presented with the award from The London League of Referees Merit award, which Old Cats have won 3 times in 5years.OLDCATERHAMIANS "A"XV 0

Old Cats seconds had a hard afternoon against freemans, conceding a try after 10mins against the run of play the Cats defence which has been evident all season then kicked in they had chances and SCRUM HALF Paddy Westbury returning after a long lay off played OUT OF SKIN TAKING THE GAME TO THE LARGER PACK of freemans! Mark Hatt at second row showed how nowadays not only are you lifted to the heavens to gain possession you also have to get round the park, and he put some great tackles and starred in the loose with Sam Stanley, What possession Cats did have against Freemans Dave Gee used well to ignite the slumbering three quarter line of old Cats, Cats deep into Freemans 22 Again mishandled and a breakaway try by there opponents, they took there chances well, a well drilled team. The pluses out of this game were a few newcomers Brody AND Decicita who came through the game with gusto performances! Cats were about to get something out of the game deep into freemans half, 1/2/and 3 phase giving the chances to the Cats three quarter line, then Cats got turned over and on the strength of that a well worked try by freemans, finally put the nail in the coffin of Cats!!

A bad start by Caterham, straight from the kick off a knock on by Alex Rayment, his only mistake of the afternoon! Caterham's young scrum half, saw Old Wals take the initiative and the early scrums, and in the bargain score two well organised trys, 12-0 Caterham again were still in the changing room and all at sea but Caterham's no8 John Wilden, took the game to Old Wals, it was niggly and with tempers fraying, Caterham, kept there heads and fought for every thing after the initial burst by Old Wals, on 20 mins,Old wals again made in roads through cats backs with there open side flanker Steve Smith, superb in everything they created he broke through and only try saving tackles from Falkner and Ansell, Saw Caterham rebuild and set up base in Old Wals 22, Old Wals continuing to infringe ,Cats were awarded with 2 penalties, but sadly missed,by Turney Caterham continued to move closer to score. With the scrums now working in Cats favour and Alex Rayment feeding Dave Gee with descent ball this released the In form Lloyd Everard,Cats longest serving 1st teamer on the pitch with 19years on the clock and still ever impressive,he took a great ball after the initial break from Cats No8 and Man of the Match John Wilden who popped to Gee and then to Everard who scored just to the left of the posts, the conversion was taken by Gee 12-7.Cats were now finding each other and interplay between BACKS AND FORWARDS,THEY WERE PLAYING 15 man rugby, this was ripping through Wals defence.A couple of half breaks By the Old Wals pack broke the Cats Pattern but great defence by Haynes and Mowatt thwarted the Wals. On thirty mins Cats produced a good passage of play which turned the game,in there favour a break by Wilden who fed Walkden a turn of pace which saw just the fly half and the full back only to beat,Walkden took the tackle and great support by Mowatt took the pop pass, and with an outrageous dummy beat the last man to score under the posts,Gee converted 12-14.
Half time came and went and Caterham continued straight from the kick off a break from Wilden again saw the try line beckoning only for a handling error and Old Wals taking the scum and clearing there lines, From the lineout Caterham Second row Geoff Lawrence caught and a drive a miss move from Everard saw Ansell come into the line and kick through for the winger to chase into the corner Smith got there only for desperate defending from Old Wals saw the referee give a penalty right on the Wals line Quick thinking from Ansell saw A tap penalty who fed Falkner who scored in the corner.12-19 the Conversion was missed,In the loose Caterham were now controlling and there no way back on the hour were Wals Influential Skipper,Steve Smith went of injured. Cats pressure now was taking its toll,a5 metre scrum saw Rayment spin the ball to Gee who made a half break and fed Wilden who crashed over the line for a well deserved try.12-24.Cats now with 8mins remaining Got yet another line out due to continual pressure from the good work in the loose By Lane,Walkden caught quick ball from Rayment saw Turney create space for Ansell to come into the line and score to the left of the posts 12-31.Caterham played for 70 mins not 80 but a deserved win in the end,

OLD CATERHAMIANS 7 LONDON IRISH AMATEURS 22
The Irish were smiling when they Left Park Avenue Caterham on Saturday. They will win SURREY ONE by a stroll. Cats defence was again watertight and Three unseen infringements by the referee were a harsh blow dealt to Cats in the opening quarter, at the level Caterham play, and the level Irish should, and will be, playing in a couple of season's time. The small decisions which were missed cost Cats dearly on this occasion. From the kick off Irish took the game to Cats and every penalty that Irish took they ran the ball putting Caterham on the back foot, for 70% of the game.
From a resulting scrum which put Cats under pressure in Irish's 22, Irish breaking out and a forward pass from Irish's no10 released the outside centre who was 5 metres from the line and The excellent Turney took him down and with the tryline beckoning the Irish winger, with great support followed up to score in the corner. 5-0 to Irish. Straight from the kick off a half break from Davey saw Cats get into the Irish's 22 a handling error by Cats again back peddling and a superb tackle again by Turney at fullback saw him stay on his feet the Winger did not release the ball by then support had arrived only for the referee to give Irish a penalty against Turney for handling the ball in the ruck a strange decision which both sets of supporters could not understand!! From the resulting tap penalty the No 10 again span a long pass out to the winger which was forward, and he touched down in the corner. The try was given, 10-0. By this time 20 mins had gone and a little bit of needle was creeping in, both sets of forwards were like sparring boxers standing toe to toe. Davey in the loose was superb, Ronane who has just returned to the club after a long holiday, was also outstanding.
The third back row player Dave Cosnett who has played for Cats for over 15 years flew in from Singapore the day previous, for the game!!! He too was everywhere breaking up Irish's game plan. With 5 mins remaining of the first half Cats scrums were suffering. In Mowatts defence at scrum half, he was picking up bits, but, Irish could smell a big win, Mowatts and Dockery at half back tackled fearlessly, But a half break and a missed tackle saw Cats line breached yet again in the corner, 15-0 Half time.
The second half started with a handling error from the normally dependable Turney, allowing Irish yet again to put Cats pack through the mill. Cats brave forwards were not conceding, and the three quarter partnership of Falkner and Everard was IMMENSE. The game was turning a bit edgy with both sets of players squaring up. Eventually Cats put Irish down on their 5 metre line and for ten minutes battered Irish's line, the Cats took a leaf out of Irish's book and tried to run the ball at their opponents, it worked and yet again an error from Cats let in the Irish and a sweeping move all the way up the pitch saw Irish backs and forwards linking up and forcing there way over the line, and a conversion to follow.22-0.
Caterham were not down and out and the Irish thought that would open the flood gates but Caterham's, resolve held and for the final 15 mins Cats, had Irish infringing continually which gave Caterham the momentum, to pin the Irish in the corners Caterham line out all after noon had been excellent, and with a catch from Mark Walkden and the Cats forwards driving him to within 7 metres of the line, the Irish went offside and tempers were fraying, Eventually the referee had, had enough and awarded Caterham a Penalty Try.22-5
Caterham now were on a roll and if it was as if the Irish were tired. Caterham again took the game to the Irish and this time the referee saw dangerous play from the Irish Hooker and sin binned him, Irish down to14 Caterham were having some positive Moves Max Forster driving through the Irish defence With 5 to go Caterham again were on the Irish line only for the Cats to knock on and give the Irish breathing space, and to clear their lines for the last time
Cats can draw on this game as a good rule of thumb They drew the second half 7-7,and with the up and coming players coming through it is looking good at present!
Caterhams 2nd XV WON A Titanic battle with PELHAMIANS 8-5 WITH ATRY FROM Nigel Collins.
Caterhams3RD XV DREW 7-7 WITH Bromley 4ths a good all round performance for Caterham in their last league game of 2000.
