was more like a Headmaster's end of year, rather than an end of life report. It was concise and critical pointing out strengths and faults. From anyone else it could have been insulting but delivered by John Evans it was authoritative and respectful. It was a brilliant summation of a good man and a life of devoted service. I was on leave from Germany at the time and before returning to duty called in on Prof. John. I asked him what was his earliest memory and without hesitation he said that he clearly remembered the Brecon Beacons alight with fires and the celebrations heralding the end of the Crimean War in 1856.
He had by this stage given up riding his bicycle (into his early 90s) and his even older tricycle, which he rode until nearly 100. He had to return to the tricycle, he said, because he was finding difficulty with the hills!
