The Headmaster of the Secondary School, Mr Jacob Morgan, was a deacon at my father's Chapel and a close friend of the family, and opined that I would not pass but that it would be good practice and experience for me the following year. He reckoned without Mr Adami. I was now the only candidate left from class four in our school and Mr Adami's reputation was at stake. He devoted much time and effort into bringing me up to the level at which he felt I would stand a chance. And so the big day came. There were two sessions; English and Arithmetic. I can recall writing a composition and not knowing how to spell "caught", tried under my breath to ask the boy in the next desk but he wouldn't tell me or more likely didn't know either so it went down as "cort". Some of the Arithmetic was above my head but I made a good stab at it. After it was over, I walked back with some of the boys from class five at my school and listened while they compared answers. I thought I had not done all that badly. When the results were posted I had come in at number 28.
