Under 18 Team Match Reports for Season 2002-2003
Sunday 11th May 2003 - ISYL Open
Cup
played at Gainsborough Sports Centre Ipswich
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 2, Whitton Sports 0 (1-0)
A goal in each half saw the Seasiders through to the Cup over a very competent
Whitton side who contested the game to the final whistle.
Both
keepers were kept busy throughout with Matt Morgan in the Felixstowe making a
number of fine saves to maintain a clean sheet.
Parry and Anderson provided excellent performances in defence, and needed to
against a pacey and skilful Whitton attack.
Pugh and Capon found space down the flanks to show their speed and used it to
good effect.
The dangerous Mark Cooper scored the opening goal
when he whipped the ball past the stranded keeper from 12 yards after a flowing
move from the Seasiders.
The second half saw Whitton press for a reply but found Fowkes outstanding at
left back. A fine run and cross from Pugh down the left found
Aiden Sharpe who made no mistake from 10 yards to
score the Seasider's second.
Congratulations to all the players and Management Team for this deserved
success, from everyone at the club, following a great season for the Under 18's.

Sunday 4th May 2003 - ISYL League
Cup Final
played at Gainsborough Sports Centre Ipswich
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1, Christchurch Eagles 3 (1-0)
The Seasiders deservedly held the lead at the break but failed to maintain their
form after the interval with the Eagles lifting the Cup following an excellent
second half performance.
With wind
advantage Felixstowe settled quickly and were much the sharper of the two sides
in the first half. Gabriel went close with rising shots over the bar in the
early exchanges before Simon Gallagher swept the
ball home from close range in the 18th minute following a corner. A dipping shot
from Pugh shaved the bar as the Seasiders pressed to increase the advantage
before the interval but had to settle for a narrow lead at the break.
The Eagles raised their game after the interval and were deservedly level on 63
minutes when Josh Peacock rose above a static
defence to head home over the stranded Aldous in the Felixstowe goal. Cooper and
Ellwood joined the game but the fluency of the first half was missing with Bruce
in the Eagles goal little troubled.
Chris Williams put the Eagles ahead on 72 minutes
shooting home from 12 yards after a defensive slip and
Alex Duncan was on hand to seal the victory with 3 minutes remaining as
he clinically finished a well worked move.
Congratulations to Christchurch Eagles
Next Sunday the Under 18s return to Gainsborough Sports Centre to play Whitton Sports in the Open Cup Final - Kick off 1.30pm
Thursday 24th April 2003 - ISYL Open
Cup
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3, Woodbridge 1 (3-0)
A thrilling cup semi-final at Dellwood Avenue saw the young Seasiders go through
to the final of the Ipswich & Suffolk league open cup. Three classic first half
strikes and one second half reply from Woodbridge were enough to win the game.
The visitors
started the better as a nervous home side were giving the ball away to easily,
but it was clear from the off that our defence were in the mood. For all
Woodbridge’s great passing football they were unable to penetrate our solid
backline.
Our recent play has seen us a bit narrow so the instructions were to use the
flanks as often as possible, with Ollie Donnelly wide right and the in form
Shaun Pugh on the left. Again we were a little narrow but when we used the width
it was to devastating effect. With both central mid-fielders missing it took a
while for the new partnership of Matty Morgan and Phil Demir to settle, but they
were certainly working hard.
Midway through the first half a defence splitting pass from Lee Parry saw Mark
Cooper escape his marker and race to the by-line where he squared the ball
across the box where Shaun Pugh raced in to send a
shot high into the top left of the net. Again Woodbridge responded with neat
play and both sides were battling hard. Our back four were keeping the visitors
lively attackers tightly shackled. Their biggest threat was from set-pieces,
which saw them hit the post and another chance was brilliantly headed off the
line by Matty Morgan. A forward run from Matty saw him link up well with the
front two and Ross Gabriel slipped the perfect ball for
Shaun Pugh again, whose terrific left foot drive nestled in the far
corner of the net. Mark Cooper made it three just
before the break, in space just outside the box he unleashed an unstoppable shot
past the diving keeper and gave us a lead that on play flattered us, but
creating and taking chances is what it’s all about.
The second half, and the expected Woodbridge onslaught did not materialise and in fact we started the brighter, but a goalkeeping error saw Woodbridge pull one back. The visitors threw everything at us for twenty minutes but we held firm, and as time went on we knew we had done enough. No more goals were scored, but well done to two sets of lads who gave their all tonight, and showed that there is wealth of local young talent around.
Sunday 13th April 2003 - Easter
Junior Alliance
Woodbridge 3,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 0
Our last league game of the season saw us make the short journey to Notcutts
Park Woodbridge.
With three regulars on a skiing trip and the ISYFL side without a game, in came
Josh Hussey, Simon Gallagher and Ross Gabriel to the squad. We started Ross up
front with Aiden Sharpe and Josh in the centre of mid-field whilst Simon was on
the bench. A good first half performance saw us dominate the game as Josh rose
to the challenge and gave a strong performance, whilst Aiden and Ross were
causing the good Woodbridge defence problems. At the other end Mark Anderson and
Lee Parry were keeping the Dangerous Jerome Laidlaw quiet. For all our
domination the half ended goalless, as in recent games we have dried up a bit in
front of goal.
(0-0)
The second half saw the home side turn the screw and were getting on top; we
made a couple of changes which evened the game up again. We were made to pay for
our missed chances when Laidlaw did get through and cleverly lobbed Pittsy. They
then scored a second in similar circumstances despite a good effort from Pittsy
to save it. A third then came which was a blow, but we certainly rued those
first half misses.
The EJA league programme is now over, but we still have to play Woodbridge again in the ISYFL open cup semi-final. It is pencilled in for Thursday 24th April at Dellwood Avenue.
Sunday 6th April 2003 -
Easter Junior Alliance
Saffron Walden 4,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 0
The alliance side
made the long trek to Saffron Walden missing a couple of key players and
although suffered a 4-0 defeat, it was a game that could easily have finished
4-4. Missed chances and bad luck left us scratching our heads as to how we
didn’t get on the score sheet.
That said, our hosts showed why they will finish in third spot, they were very
strong and used the various slopes on the pitch to full advantage. Two goals
were disappointing from our point of view, as they were totally unnecessary.
That said it has been a long hard season for many of the lads, playing two games
a weekend at a very high level, and the summer break will be very welcome for
these lads.
We still have the ISYFL open cup semi-final against Woodbridge to look forward
to and although on paper three league games to go, with the season finishing on
April 13th it’s looking unlikely we will play them all.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Whitton Sports 3,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 4
The ISYFL side had a fantastic
result at home defeating Whitton Sports 4-3, with regular keeper Darren Aldous
missing Josh Hussey took up the gloves, and did a fine job. I don’t have the
goalscorers to hand but they will be on the fixture sheet asap
Sunday 30th March 2003 - Eastern Junior Alliance
Wivenhoe 1,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1 (1-1)
We travelled to
Wivenhoe in the EJA and a hot day and very hard surface, saw our hosts adapt
better to the conditions in the first half. We were having trouble controlling
the ball and our passing left a lot to be desired to say the least. Wivenhoe
deservedly took the lead midway through the half, but this did buck us up, and
although it was not pretty we did create several good chances. Good strikes from
Aiden Sharpe and Shaun Pugh tested the home keeper. The equaliser came with a
cracking strike from Ollie Donnelly, who doesn’t
score many but when he does they are usually for the scrapbook. A clearance came
to him just above waist height on the edge of the box and his terrific volley
gave the keeper no chance, half time 1-1.
The
second half saw us pin our hosts back as we created plenty of chances, although
Wivenhoe still looked dangerous on the break getting forward in numbers. Their
best chance came from a free kick which curled round the wall, but Pitts’y was
equal to it diving low to his right and gathering in. Jack Entwhistle came
closest for us as his well placed shot came back off of the foot of the post.
Mark Cooper leapt above everybody from a corner but saw his header just go wide.
Aiden and Shaun had shooting chances but lacked accuracy, apart from one from
Aiden that was goal bound, and with the keeper beaten the defender somehow
hooked it up and over as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Walsham Le Willows 0,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3 (0-2)
The ISYFL were away also, at Walsham Le Willows and secured all three points
courtesy of a 3-0 victory. A fine Ross Gabriel through ball released
Simon Gallagher who calmly slotted past the keeper
from 15 yards. Constant F&W pressure saw the deserved second goal come from
Ross Gabriel after some neat midfield play
involving Josh Hussey, Chris Ryan and James Toner.
Because of the heat the game slowed in the second period, but the lads did what
they had to do and it was Ross Gabriel again who
finally killed the game off with his second of the afternoon.
Sunday 23rd March 2003 - Ipswich & Suffolk League
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 6, Grundisburgh 0 (2-0)
A second half hat trick from James Toner sealed the win for the Seasiders
this afternoon in brilliant Sunshine at Dellwood Avenue.
An early goal from Ashley Ellwood settled the
nerves following indifferent form of late. Despite enjoying the greater share of
possession it was the last kick of the half before the lead was increased as
Ellwood scored his second beating the advancing keeper with a neatly taken goal
from 10 yards.
After a competitive first half the visitors faded following the interval
allowing the Felixstowe forwards time and space to create a number of scoring
opportunities.
Three good strikes from James Toner and a ricochet
off an unfortunate defender for the sixth enabled a comfortable home win.
The Alliance Side were without a fixture today.
Sunday 16th March 2003 -
Ingilby Cup, Quarter Final
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1 , Boreham Wood 2 (0-1)
A welcome break from league action saw us entertain Borehamwood at Dellwood for
the Ingilby cup Quarter –final.
We are the two furthest points apart in the Eastern Junior Alliance, so the
visitors, arriving by coach with their supporters were certainly here for a good
day out and many thanks for their good humoured banter, and custom in the
clubhouse before and after the game.
On the pitch two evenly matched sides provided an excellent game of football,
refereed superbly by the league secretary Richard Coleman. We started the
brighter dominating most areas of the pitch, with neither side creating too many
chances, but that said some excellent football was on display from both sides.
When our defence was breached Pitts’y showed why he is rated so highly in goal
at under 16 level, likewise the visitors keeper was in confident mood. Against
the run of play, Borehamwood took the lead, which some say was a soft goal, but
in my opinion was a clever finish, as the half ended 1-0 to the visitors.
The downside was the injury to Will Whitesides, which turned out to be a broken
ankle, (our second of the season). Will is one of those players that never gives
less than 100% and after a short period out of the side, he came back to stake a
claim for his place and was so unlucky. He’ll be back.
The
second half started with that controlled competitive edge that makes a great
game, and midway through Aiden Sharpe equalised,
after picking the ball up on the edge of the box he side stepped the defender
and rifled a shot into the top corner past the diving keeper.
It was always going to be one goal that decided this game and the visitors got
it with five minutes to go, and it was the best one of the game from a good 25
yards. It was one of those you knew was going in when it was kicked. To be fair
the last 15 minutes Borehamwood were on top, as the old chestnut reared its ugly
head, six boys had played 90 minutes in the border premier league the day
before, and extra time would have been a nightmare for some.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Bury Town 1,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1
The ISYFL team travelled to Bury Town and after a small step backwards in recent
games they came away with an excellent point courtesy of a 1-1 draw. In fact if
Ashlee Elwood's clever lob late on had gone in the three points would not have
been unjust. Unfortunately it grazed the post going agonizingly wide. Good
performances from Josh Hussey and James Toner were plus factors, but the whole
team showed the right spirit against a tough side.
Sunday 9th March 2003 - Ipswich & Suffolk League
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1 , Christchurch Eagles 5 (0-3)
A well marshalled Eagles defence restricted
goal scoring opportunities for the Seasiders.
Aiden Sharpe,
beat two defenders before sliding the ball under the advancing keeper to give
hope of a fight back early in the second half, but it proved to be a false dawn
with the Eagles re-gaining their grip on the game.
The visitors took the lead on 14 minutes with a tap in from 4 yards with two
players looking suspiciously off-side. There was no disputing the second goal a
wonderful curling shot over the keeper from 25
yards and the third from the edge of the box virtually sealed the game.
The Seasiders were working hard to win the ball in midfield with Toner, Ryan and
Whitesides battling hard to gain an equal share of possession, but the Eagles
defence were quick to deny any sight of goal.
Following Sharpe's reply the Seasiders played with more purpose but two further
goals from the Eagles, a break from the half way line and a goal direct from a
free kick confirmed the points for the visitors.
Eastern Junior Alliance
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1, Haverhill Rovers 0
In the afternoon we
welcomed Haverhill Rovers for the second time of the weekend, this time in the
Eastern Junior Alliance. Our visitors were lying third from bottom, but not on
goals conceded they have struggled to score with just five goals all season.
Consequently the game went to form as they never really troubled our goal but
defended in depth and proved very difficult to breakdown. For long periods they
had all eleven players behind the ball. Three of our most influential players,
Craig Morton, Lee Parry and Jack Entwhistle were all injured, so in came Phil
Demir and Mark Cooper in midfield, plus Ben Wyard made his full debut at left
back. We created a few chances first half but determined defending and poor
finishing saw the game turn around 0-0.
For the second
half we switched to 4-3-3 bringing on Aiden Sharpe for Ollie Donnelly who got
injured in the first half. We now had Aiden, Ross Gabriel and Shaun Pugh up
front, and we totally dominated the half. Lots of chances came and Shaun in
particular was causing Haverhill’s backline problems. Time went by and chances
went begging as the visitors hung on with a mixture of luck and dogged
defending, and we had just about resigned ourselves to a 0-0 draw, when with six
minutes to go Shaun popped up in the box to slot past the advancing keeper. A
huge sigh of relief all round for three points we certainly deserved, but did
not look like getting.
Sunday 2nd March 2003
- Eastern Junior Alliance
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 6, Woodbridge Town 4 (3-3)
It was our first meeting with local rivals Woodbridge Town in the Eastern Junior
Alliance, and a ten goal thriller ensued.
The first half
was a strange affair as the visitors dominated but we, amazingly, went 3-1 up.
Against the run of play a fine strike from Shaun Pugh gave us the lead, but
Woodbridge soon pegged it back, through the dangerous Jerome Laidlaw. We were
losing the important battle in midfield, and our usual organisation at the back
deserted us and our tackling was weak to say the least. A double strike from
Ross Gabriel on his return to the alliance side, then gave us that 3-1
advantage, but Woodbridge kept pressing and by the time the half-time whistle
came it was 3-3. The fact that we had scored three goals had kept us in the
game, as frankly the visitors deserved to be out of sight.
The second half was a completely different story, and proves that half-time self
analysis does work. The defence got their act together, and we were much sharper
and stronger in the tackle as we got on top of the game right from kick off.
Ross completed his hat-trick and Shaun grabbed his second as we went 5-3 up with
the visiting defenders starting to tire, but up front they were still posing a
threat, once again they pulled a goal back. Injuries to Craig Morton and Lee
Parry meant we had to shuffle the pack, and we dropped skipper Jack Entwhistle
to centre half where he was magnificent. The other centre-half Mark Anderson
completed the scoring rounding off a good personal forty five minutes. Two
halves two different teams and a fine win in the end.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1 , Thurston 7
The ISYFL side followed on in the afternoon, as they welcomed Thurston to
Dellwood. I didn't see this one but speaking to Terry the less said the better
as they went down 7-1, after some excellent results recently. One or two need to
buck their ideas up and change the attitude, or decisions will have to be made.
A word of warning to them, there will be a new bunch coming through next season,
so competition for places will be much tougher.
Sunday 23rd February 2003
- Eastern Junior Alliance
Newmarket Town 0,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 2 (0-2)
The alliance team were away to Newmarket Town on what was a glorious day at
Cricket Field Road.
We started with the front pairing of Mark Cooper and Aiden Sharpe, but within
ten minutes Mark had to come off with a calf injury he sustained in the warm up.
We shuffled the pack and brought Ollie Donnelly onto the left-hand side and
pushed Shaun Pugh up alongside Aiden. Shaun took
the opportunity and scored twice in ten eight minutes. The first a clever
overhead kick from a corner, but the second was a peach, a bad clearance came to
Shaun and from all off 35 yards with the keeper stranded he put the perfect lob
back into the net. We continued to dominate the first half and Matt Morgan in
goal was a virtual spectator, although did have to pull off one fine save, as
the half-ended 2-0 to us.
The second half we switched keepers introducing Under 16 year old Steven Pitts, after his recent transfer from Ipswich Wanderers. Newmarket were a lot more determined and the game turned into a scrappy affair as we battled away. When we did play football we looked the much better side but we needed to play the ball around much more than we did. Ben Wyard made his debut for the Alliance half way through the second half, after some good performances in the ISYFL side. Both Ben and Steven did very well, and will keep the competition for places up. We ran out 2-0 winners against a gallant opposition who fought all the way.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3 , Bramford United 1 (2-1)
The ISYFL team welcomed second place Bramford United to Dellwood Avenue, and
after going a goal down turned the game around to take all three points,
courtesy of a 3-1 win.
After a late start due to the league appointed referee not turning up we found
ourselves 1-0 down after three minutes. Literally within a minute we were level
after an excellent ball from Ash Ellwood saw Ross Gabriel
run onto it and round the keeper to score. Twenty minutes later Ashlee was
fouled but a good advantage from the ref enabled him to poke the ball through
for Ross to grab his second. Bramford lost the plot
for the rest of the half, and we needed to be disciplined and not get involved
as the half came to an end.
The second half was a good game as the visitors calmed down, and the only goal of the half came as a terrific free kick from Ross struck the bar and bounced down where Ash was on hand to slot it home. Thanks go to Bramford for supplying a referee at such short notice.
Sunday 16th February 2003
- Eastern Junior Alliance
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3, Bury Town Academy 6 (0-4)
A bad day at the office was how one spectator summed it up to me after Sunday’s
Junior Alliance fixture, at home to Witham Town.
It was way back in September when we lost 4-2 at Witham, but we gave a good
account of ourselves, and until Ashllee Ellwood broke his ankle we looked like
getting something from the game, so we thought we had a chance of getting a
result today.
In a bizarre game this Sunday we went 2-0 down in as many minutes, and were quite frankly all over the place defensively, and it looked like men against boy’s with Witham really looking up for it. Still struggling we went further behind, but at last this spurned us into action. We then had our best spell of the game, and looked like the team we have been. An excellent move saw Ollie Donnelly finish superbly to give us hope. The killer blow came a few minutes later, just before the break when the visitors scored a fourth.
We had
some tough analysis at half time, and talked about salvaging some pride. All
that went to pot as we conceded a fifth within a minute of the restart. The rest
of the game was not pretty to watch, with passes going astray and the ball being
held onto too long as the
basics seem to desert us. In fairness, the boys who had played full games on
Saturday, including both centre halves were struggling, but out of the blue we
pulled two goals back. The first a neat finish from Mark Cooper quickly followed
by an Aiden Sharpe penalty after he had been bundled over in the box. Witham
were still very strong going forward, but found Matty Morgan in our goal in
superb form, earning him the MOM award. We couldn’t find the forth goal which
would have set up an interesting finish, and disappointedly right on the final
whistle, we conceded a sixth with a free header from a corner.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Christchurch Eagles 2,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3 (2-1)
A different story from the ISYFL squad as they travelled to Gresham sports club,
Ipswich to take on a useful Christchurch Eagles and came away with a fine 3-2
win, to give the club some cheer from the weekend.
Midway through the first half Chris Ryan latched onto a bobbling ball in the
area to put us 1-0 up. Eagles equalised and then took the lead just before the
break. Straight from the kick off in the second half a sweeping move ended in a
good finish from Ross Gabriel to level the scores. What proved to be the winner
came ten minutes later via a terrific 25-yard volley from Adam Aziz. A
defender’s clearance came straight to Adam who hit first time straight back past
a despairing keeper.
Sunday 9th February 2003
- Eastern Junior Alliance
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1, Bury Town Academy 5 (1-1)
League leaders Bury Town Academy were the visitors to Dellwood Avenue on yet
another wet and rainy day.
The young seasiders started with five in midfield, with a solid centre
consisting of Will Whitesides, Craig Morton and Jack Entwhistle, and their
tenacity gave us a good basis to take the game to our illustrious visitors. This
we did and for the first fifteen minutes or so we were the better side. This saw
us take the lead (a rare occurrence against Bury) through
Craig Morton after some excellent build up play.
The lad’s then put in a super human effort protecting the lead, as the first
half turned into a superb game to watch between two very good sides. The
visitors found the equaliser with a precise move, and at the right time just
before the break, which changed the half time talk, and put them in the driving
seat.
We
adapted to what might happen, and started the second half brightly, and were
unlucky not to take the lead again on a couple of occasions. The game then
changed after a nasty injury to keeper Matty Morgan who got his third bang on
the head, this time with a boot which saw lengthy treatment to a bloody nose and
stud marks along his cheekbone. Shortly after, a tame shot found it’s way
through Matt’s hands to give the visitors the lead, and so unlucky for Matt.
Again we dug deep and the boy’s can be proud of the way they battled for so
long, but the killer came with the best goal of the game. A Bury corner saw the
perfect delivery, and the ball was attacked with such pace and power that the
header nearly broke the net, and we were 3-1 down.
A bad decision from yours truly saw us switch to 4-4-2, and combined with Bury’s
superior fitness we conceded two more late on to make it 5-1, which was cruel,
as the boy’s had given so much, but there is no question why Bury top the
league.
(Andy Phillips)
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Martlesham 0,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3
The ISYFL went away to Martlesham in the league and came back with a 3-0
victory, courtesy of two Ashlee Elwood goals and a
Karl Mitchell penalty.
Ashlee showed the quality he has, and now needs to concentrate on his fitness
since breaking his ankle at Witham Town. If he does, I’m sure he will be
pressing for that Jewson league place that was so near before.
A great three points and well done to Terry & Chris for letting Karl take the
penalty in his last game before joining the army, best wishes Karl, from your
home club Felixstowe & Walton United.
Sunday 26th January 2003
- Eastern Junior Alliance
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 6, Newmarket 0 (5-0)
On a sticky Dellwood Avenue the Seasiders played host to Newmarket Town in the
Eastern Junior Alliance league, and right from the off a rejuvenated side were
determined to redress last weeks defeat at Bury.
The home side went 3-0 up inside 10 minutes, which meant the poor old tea lady
(Mrs. Phillps) missed them all. The first saw a sweeping move with Aiden Sharpe
driving the ball across the box and Shaun Pugh made
up a lot of ground to slide in and volley home. The next two came from corners
and both centre halves, Lee Parry and
Mark Anderson got on the score sheet, after two
errors from the visiting keeper. Skipper, Jack Entwhistle and Shaun with his
second made it 5-0 by the break.
The second half saw plenty more chances created but only one more goal, through
Aiden Sharpe. MOM award went to Craig Morton who
bossed the midfield all game, but Shaun, Mark and Jack pushed him close, and
everyone played their part.
Ipswich & Suffolk League
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 3, Wetherden & Haughley
In the morning the ISYFL side entertained Wetherden & Haughley in a dour game
that ended 3-0 to the Seasiders. Simon Gallagher,
Karl Mitchell and Ashlee
Elwood were the goalscorers. A bit of come down after last weeks
excellent cup win, but Terry and Chris will be happy with the three points.
Sunday 24th November 2002
- Unders 18's Ingilby Cup
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 4, Clapton 1 (2-0)
An excellent win for the Under 18's against a strong and free running
Clapton side.
The London side possessed speed and skill but the Seasiders held the advantage
on organisation and decisiveness in front of goal. Two goals in each half
before the visitors replied with a late consolation provided reward for calm
defensive work and sharp finishing with Clapton enjoying long spells of quality
possession without a finish that much of their build up play deserved . Aide
Sharpe scored twice for the Seasiders with Mark Cooper and Shaun Pugh also on
the score sheet.
Sunday
3rd November 2002 - Under 18 EASY Cup
Under 18s
- Grays Athletic progressed to the next round EASY Cup with a 4-1 win at
Dellwood Avenue this afternoon. Three goals in the last 15 minutes of the first
half settled the tie and though Will Whitesides pulled a goal back after the
break the Essex side fully deserved their win.
Sunday 13th October 2002
- Easter Junior Alliance U18
Haverhill 0,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1,
Our first three
points in the Junior Alliance came courtesy of a 1-0 away win at Haverhill, had
a bitter sweet taste to it, as it was probably the worst we have played all
season.
On a very narrow pitch against an awkward side who got lots of bodies behind the
ball, we struggled to get any rhythm to our game. Fortunately our hosts never
really put us under pressure in our final third. When we did create chances our
finishing was woeful, and Haverhill’s best player their goalkeeper was in
tremendous form.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half, when Will Whitesides broke
down the right and squared the ball for Aiden Sharpe
to blast into the roof of the net. We huffed and puffed and certainly looked
likely to score more but it didn’t happen.
The good points were the back four looked really solid, as Lee Parry and Mark
Anderson are starting to build up a good understanding at the heart of the
defence. Mark Cooper came on up front showing a good positive attitude, and was
unlucky to see his header come back off the bar.
Wetherden & Haughley 1,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 5 - Ipswich & Suffolk Youth league
The ISYFL side at last realised their potential beating Wetherden & Haughley 5-1
away in the cup. A Shaun Pugh hat-trick saw him cap
his M0M performance, but an all round good team performance put them through to
the next round.
Sunday 6th October 2002
- Easter Junior Alliance U18
Stanway Rovers 1,
Felixstowe & Walton Utd. 1, (0-1)

Stand-in keeper Matt Morgan made a succession of fine saves to deny the
Rovers forwards until the 87th minute when a quickly taken free kick found the back of the net
for the home side. Normally a full
back Matt was pressed into action following Josh Hussey's recent injury.
Jack Enthwistle headed
the Seasiders into the lead on the stroke of half time against the run of play
as the visitors fought hard to contain a strong Stanway side. Rovers continued
to be frustrated by Morgan's heroics during the second period with Sharpe and
Donnelly looking to catch the home side out with a quick counter attack.
With time running down the Seasiders looked to be holding on to all three points
until Morgan was adjudged to have carried the ball out of the area and Stanway
deservedly, on chances alone, claimed a share of the points from a thoroughly
entertaining game.
