History of the Community
Becoming Established in England

While they had the intention of returning to France when this might prove practicable, the community had to find at least a temporary home in England and some means of earning a living. Their meagre resources had been used up by the expenses of the journey to England and they had between them just four French sous which are still preserved at Fernham.

The four Sous

As the nuns had always been involved in education, it was natural that they should turn to this to earn a little money. Many people showed them charity and kindness and their work was fruitful. The community settled first at Bodney Hall, Norfolk, then Heath Hall, Yorkshire and finally at Orrell Mount, Lancashire, before a site was found on which to build a permanent home, all hopes of a return to France having been given up.

UKIn 1835 an estate was purchased at Princethorpe in Warwickshire where they built a monastery and school in a style reminiscent of their former home at Montargis. The land was used as a farm which was run by a bailiff and, at the end of the century, a second church designed by Pugin the younger, was added to the building complex. The community remained there for well over a century but dwindling vocations combined with educational developments ultimately made it impracticable for them to continue with the school and with a property of that size and they moved in 1966 to their present monastic home at Fernham in Oxfordshire.

The estate at Princethorpe was bought by the Sacred Heart Fathers and is now a boys' boarding school.
