Lightwave Tutorial:
Building a Simple Robot - v1.1

Section 3: The Neck Step.

Right lets build our Robot a neck, it probably won't be the most exciting part of our Robot but at least it should keep the poor things head from falling off.

STEP 1: Play Ball.

Figure 1.5: Ball Parameters.

Change to layer two, to model the neck so we can keep it separate from the rest of our Robot that we have built so far.

The top of the neck is a ball shape on which our Robot's head can turn and tilt.

Create a Ball (from the Create tab, or by pressing 'O') and use the parameters shown in Figure 1.5 in the Numeric Requester ('n'). Drop the Ball tool.

STEP 2: Two Smooth Shifts.

Ok, before we start this step I admit it will seem odd, and that it is one of those really annoying steps you get in tutorials where there is no obvious effect, yet. All I can really say is that the step is required to create the polygons that will help give the neck it's shape once it is converted to SubPatches.

Select the bottom eight polygons in the sphere. Now perform a Smooth Shift (Multiply tab or 'F'), and use the numeric requester to set an Offset of 0, and a Scale of 100%. Drop the Smooth Shift tool (Spacebar, and reselect it, open the Numeric requester again and this will activate the previous settings. In this particular instance we want to have applied these settings twice to create the geometry we need. Close the requester and drop the tool again. Leave the polygons selected.

STEP 3: A Moving experience.

With the polygons still selected from the last step, select the Move tool from the Modify tab ('t'). Now any one of the Left, Right, Front, or Back viewports press the 'Ctrl' key and then hold down the mouse button as you drag downwards. This moves the polygons that are selected in only the axis you first moved the mouse. In our case we want to move the polygons down by 150mm. To get the distance correct use the Offset display in the Bottom left of your screen.

That's nearly it for the neck, before we make the last change deselect everything and convert it into SubPatches to see how far we've got.

STEP 4: Brought back to Knife.

The final step is to use the Knife tool as we did in Section 2, to reinforce the bottom of the neck by making another cut. Before we do this make sure that no polygons are selected.

Select one of side views, and make a horizontal cut with the knife tool just above the group of points at the bottom of the neck. The neck should still look rounded but the bottom should now have a squarer profile.

That's it for the Neck now on to the body.
