ABOUT THE NORTH ESSEX
PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP
|
|
We meet every Tuesday, to discuss
photographic techniques, printing, cropping,
mounting, processing etc.
We view each others photographs and give
constructive comments and discuss ways of improving
our images.
While we accept that DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY is
growing in popularity and quality, UNLIKE MANY
CLUBS we do not NEGLECT traditional FILM BASED
TECHNIQUES.
We have members who work in each medium and some
that are interested in both aspects of
photography.
Our EMPHASIS is mainly on the PRACTICAL APPROACH
to taking good photographs, nevertheless we do not
neglect the TECHNICAL/THEORETICAL side.
We have PRACTICAL EVENINGS arranged for
portraiture, still life, lighting techniques,
printing, processing, toning etc.
Other evenings are dedicated to OUTDOOR/LOCATION
work for landscapes, seascapes, sport, wildlife
studio & on-location portraiture, theatre
photography etc.
GUEST SPEAKERS from the world of photography often
give talks or demonstrations of various aspects of
photography.
We also have occasional VISITS to PLACES &
EVENTS.

History:-
The Group was formed as a result of
the closure in September 2000 of the 'Starting Out'
and 'Advanced' photography classes at Tendring
Adult Community College at Green Lodge. After the
closure Mike Vaughan Chatfield, the tutor at the
college, contacted the students to arrange a
meeting, with a view to creating a photographic
group so that the students could continue their
studies The preliminary meeting was held on 6th
March 2001 at Holland Public Hall when twelve
members attended (a further three members were
unable to attend). After some discussion it was
decided that there would be two sub-groups,
starting-out and advanced. The two groups would
meet on alternate Tuesdays, with joint meetings
when there were visits from RPS assessors or
technical talks/advice from judges etc.

The Present:
The aim being to allow those
students on the Starting-Out course to continue
their studies and to improve their photographic
techniques, and for the Advanced students to work
towards acquiring their Licentiate of the Royal
Photographic Society (LRPS) and possibly advance to
the Associateship (ARPS). The workshop helps
members to expand their range of photographic
skills in all aspects of photography i.e. film
processing and printing, mounting prints,
photographing landscapes, portraiture, wildlife,
sport, creative, abstract etc. in both the
traditional and digital forms. New members are
always welcome. You do not necessarily need to work
towards LRPS/ARPS qualifications. If you take
photographs, but find that you are disappointed
with the results of your work, then come along to
one of our meetings. Bring some of your
prints/slides and discuss your problems with our
members and you will soon be producing better
pictures. After all, we were all beginners at some
time! To date there have been regular meetings and
the two sections have gradually amalgamated into a
single group, as it was found that both gained from
closer interaction and discussion of ideas.

The Future:-
We had a very full programme last
year(2008), and are looking forward to next year's
meetings with some
interesting events and some inspiring guest
speakers. We are presently trying to arrange
special discounts for members with local businesses
and/or sponsorship from local companies.
In addition we are looking for premises to set up
a permanent darkroom and possibly studio
facilities. The present membership is around
twenty, and new members are always welcome.
Whatever your level of photographic skill. You will
find plenty of help available from our more
experienced members.
