TURNBERRIE CASTLE

Some photographs from outings of Turnberrie Castle during 2001, 2002 and 2003. These range from dancing in and around Thornbury, to festivals in Upton-on-Severn, Sidmouth and even Toronto in Canada. They are in roughly chronological order. For a trip through the archives (before our brief hiatus), click here.

2001

A Postcard of photographs from some of our dancing engagements last year (2001).

A few of us posing for a group photograph after dancing in Thornbury itself ... we didn't move quickly enough to get away from the camera ! Those wearing red, white and blue rag waistcoats had just been dancing some Border Morris.

Dancing by the River Severn at the Upton-on-Severn folk festival (outside of a pub <grin> !)

At a recent "dance-out" with the the local "England's Glory" side ... here are Turnberrie Castle with the Horwich Original Dance.

At a dance-out in the Summer at the Lamb Inn, Iron Acton together with the Border Morris side from Winterbourne Down this photograph shows us dancing "Black Adder".

Turnberrie Castle making an early trip into Appalachian step dancing - also at Iron Acton.

This must be our most "far flung" photograph.

Here are two members of Turnberrie Castle dancing as part of the Toronto Morris Ale 2001, whilst on holiday in Canada this summer.

There were only two of them and they hadn't taken equipment with them, so they had to borrow some garlands from another side and "adapt" a dance down to two. Luckily, the family also contains one of our musicians !

You can see more pictures of this year's Morris Ale in Toronto by going to their site .... Click here.

Dancing at the Boar's Head Inn at Aust (South Gloucestershire) - Autumn 2001

Dancing "Lancashire" apologies to the three dancers in the bottom "star" who were cut out of the photograph. Some of the dances which we performed on this "dance out" are available as video files on the "Folk in Thornbury" CD. See the Thornbury bandstand page for more details. As part of the morning's dancing at Aust, the two Morris dance sides present (Mendip Morris and Turnberrie Castle) led a procession from the pub to the Church, as a prelude to the play "Kemp's Jig"; this can be seen below left. Below we have some of the younger members at Aust in earnest discussion about the next dance - or at least that's what we thought !

Further details about future events in the Music at Aust can be found on http://www.aust.music.btinternet.co.uk

Christmas 2001 - Dancing in Thornbury

Over the Christmas holidays we danced (outside !) at St. Mary's Centre in Thornbury. It was so cold, we were all very glad of our group fleeces (blue with our group badge embroidered on the front), which stayed on throughout the dancing on their first outing.

The Turnberrie Castle musicians at Christmas - if it's possible they got colder than the dancers (although there were one or two hot water bottles around !). At one point the concertina stopped playing due to the temperature.

2002

Bristol Children's Day of Dance (2002)

Well into 2002 now, this is this years "Bristol Children's Day of Dance" at Blaise Castle estate near Bristol. Here are four members of Turnberrie Castle dancing "Black Adder".

An impromptu "team photo" by the side of Blaise House at the Day of Dance. We were a little depleted in numbers due to the illness of some of the "usual suspects".

May 2002 - Berkeley Castle (Gloucestershire)

On a wonderfully wet day in May 2002 we danced at Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire together with England's Glory Morris. In the photograph to the left you can see four of us starting "Brimfield" in the inner courtyard of the castle. This was a wonderfully atmospheric setting in which to dance, and the floor was really good - despite the torrents of rain which we had to dodge during the afternoon. A little later in the same dance the picture to the bottom left shows the chorus from the same dance. The picture directly below, shows two members of the group dancing some Appalachian step dance figures, with some wonderful architecture in the background. .

May 2002 - Cribbs Causeway (S. Gloucestershire)

The collection of photographs around this panel all come from a stage performance at a Country Fayre held by Clifton Rugby Football Club. Had it been the normal nice, warm, sunny May afternoon, this would have been a lovely, well attended event - unfortunately, it was cold, windy and so wet that you had to wade through the mud to reach the stage !. However we danced anyway. Clockwise from above we see:

1 - The "star" figure in Horwich Original (above)

2 - Plymouth reel (below), the grins were for the press photographer who had turned up !

3 - The chorus from Saddleworth (bottom left)

4 - The lead on from Black Adder - with clouds ! (left)

August 2002 - Sidmouth Folk Festival

The photographs in this selection were taken of Turnberrie Castle dancing at the 2002 Sidmouth Folk Festival.

The three dances shown are:

(1) Black Adder (left)

(2) Horwich (left, below)

(3) Turnberrie Castle (below)

2003

Upton on Severn Folk Festival – 4 May 2003

In beautiful, bright spring sunshine (if anything a little too bright !) we danced at the Folk Festival at Upton on Severn.

In the photographs to the right and right below, you can see our premier public performance of Stave Dancing (the observant among our readers will have noted the workshop on this in Thornbury a while back !), here you can see (l–r) Iain, Denise, Eddie and Kay with our brand new staves (still lacking the last coat of varnish however).

... also at Upton, we decided to “act local” and perform the Upton on Severn stick dance.
