July 2008

Dear friends,

Your formal invitation to

Tenterden Folk Festival 2008

Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October

It is not too late for your side to put its name down to dance at Tenterden Folk Festival

·          Welcome barn dance on Friday evening with the Committee Band

·          Camp site will have added toilets!

·          Booking form for camping and Scout Hut is on website

As usual, sides are welcome to come and dance around the town on both Saturday and Sunday.  Sides are also encouraged to take part in the procession on Saturday afternoon and, if they wish, are welcome to take part in the formal display which takes place after it.  Saturday remains the main day but there are still plenty of opportunities for sides to stay on for Sunday, so may I encourage you to do so.  If your team can only come on Sunday, no problem, you are more than welcome.  We are now seeing more teams dancing on Sunday, and as in previous years, we willhave some free train tickets available (see below).

On the camping front, once again this year we can offer the use of a town centre field for camping, but this year with the added attraction of… toilets!  We really spoil you, don’t we?

We can still provide indoor camping for those taking part in the Festival if you book in advance.  We do however expect sides making use of these facilities to make a donation to the Scouts for the use of their premises.   For those of you who wish to book for the campsite or the Scout Hut, a booking form is available on our website www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk .  Also, for those of you who prefer the added luxury of showers and electricity the Woodlands Campsite (www.campingsite.co.uk) is just outside town.

One of the popular features of the festival are the Folk Trains on the Kent & East Sussex Railway, Tenterden’s own heritage railway, running for 10 miles along the Rother Valley to Bodiam, upon which various festival guests entertain the travellers.  Alongside this the KESR has been kind enough to offer a certain number of free tickets for dance sides who wanted to travel on the trains and dance at the stations along the railway.  For several years they have been offering sets of tickets on Saturday and one on Sunday, and we envisage the same for 2008.  These will be offered on a first come first served basis.  (Note.  There are not an unlimited number of tickets – last year it was 10 per team, so if you are a large side you will have to make up the balance from your own finances).

If you know of any other sides that you would like us to invite to the Festival, please let me know as soon as possible or just pass a copy of this invitation on to them and let me know you have done so.  In the last few years we have come very close to being over subscribed so an early reply is recommended.

We will be pleased to continue to provide a limited number of free weekend tickets to sides confirmed in advance.

The Festival will continue to follow the now very well established format with a few minor changes and continued improvements.  One thing that’s a little different this year is we have a welcome barn dance on Friday evening with the Committee Band.  We will be booking guests over the forthcoming months and full details will be published in the usual folk magazines and on our web site at www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk .  I will also be emailing updates to dance teams during the coming months.

Dave Masterson has retired as dance co-ordinator so I am covering this until a replacement is found (any volunteers?) Could you let me know if your team is coming, or not, by emailing me at info@tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk or posting the completed form back to Tenterden Folk Festival 2008, 15 Repton Manor Road, Ashford, Kent, TN23 3HA.

On the other hand, if you are no longer involved with your dance team or do not wish to receive any more information, please let me know and I will remove you from my mailing list.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you all at Tenterden 2008.

Alan Castle

Trustee and Festival Director
