TENTERDEN

Folk Festival 2009

Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th October

One of the main venues for this year’s festival is the Tenterden Club in Church Road where we will be using The Moulton Hall and Evans Bar which are ideal for festival events.   The Evans Bar offers a large and comfortable, carpeted area for relaxing and listening to music and festival goers will be able to buy real ale, wines and spirits at most of the events.  The adjoining Moulton Hall is a large room with a stage and wooden floor and lends itself to dances and concerts.

The first event in the Club is the WELCOME BARN DANCE on Friday evening with Geckoes and caller Will Hall.  The sound engineer for the evening will be Gordon Thrussell from Courtfield Audio in Kennington.  The actual dance will take place in the Hall and the Bar will be open and available for dancers to take a break in and for those who just wish to watch and listen to the music of this very popular Oxfordshire based band.

On Saturday events in the Bar will include “REMEMBERING JOHNNY”, a tribute to the late Johnny Collins led by his frequent singing partners of many years standing, Graeme Knights and Jim Mageean.  Many festival guests will wish to attend this event as Johnny was a very longstanding and popular figure on the international folk scene.

This tribute will be followed by the festivals regular SEA SONGS AND SHANTIES SESSION which has been transferred to the Evans Bar as it offers more space for all the singers who will wish to attend and take part.  The session will be captained by Peter Collins with a crew including Graeme Knights and Jim Mageean, Three Sheets to the Wind (Keith Kendrick, Geoff Higginbottom and Derek Gifford), Chris Roche, Sylvia Needham, Malcolm Ward and all available hands on deck!  This will be a chance to make Tenterden live up to its status as a Cinque Port.

The main Saturday evening and Sunday late afternoon CONCERTS will take place in the Moulton Hall and will feature many of the festival guests.  Full details of these concerts and other events will be found in the souvenir programme which is due out in early September.

On Saturday several events for children and families will be held in the Church Hall which is next door to the Club.  These will THE TICKLISH ALLSORTS SHOW and a dance for families and beginners.

On Sunday morning, in the Bar, Derek Gifford will present MORE BIRDS IN FOLK SONG, a follow up to last year’s very popular workshop.  Derek, a keen birder, plays snatches of recorded birdsong, talks about the birds and sings traditional English folk songs in which the bird is mentioned.

Other festival venues include the Woolpack, the White Lion, the Vine, the William Caxton, St Mildred’s Parish Church, The Town Hall and the Junior School as well as all the outdoor events in the town centre.
