There are
some changes and some new events at this year’s Tenterden Folk Festival but all
of the popular events will take place as usual. The Music Fair has moved to the Junior
School Hall in Recreation Ground
Road and has expanded to include more stalls
while the popular craft fair stays in the Town Hall. The showcase marquee, which for the last
few years has been at the back of the Woolpack, has now followed the Music
Fair to the Junior
School. Les Elvin
and Andy Smythe, will introduce guests in the marquee including The Andy
Smythe Trio, The Buckthorn Band, Janis Haves and Nibs van der Spuy (South
Africa) on Saturday and Liz & Paul Davenport, Phil Drane and the Ticklish Allsorts Show (12.30
to 2.00 pm) for children on Sunday.
There will also be other surprise guests to be announced on the day so
look out for the posters. The Sea
Songs and Shanties session has moved to the Evan’s Bar at the Tenterden Club
to cope with the number of people wishing to sing their hearts out. Band of Two will be performing a couple of
sets in the bar of the Woolpack on Saturday afternoon. Pete Collins and friends will be back in
the William Caxton on Friday evening.
There are concerts in the White Lion Saddlery and Tenterden Club and
sing-a-rounds and sessions in the Vine, White Lion and Woolpack as well as
music and song workshops. The Welcome
Barn Dance with Geckoes will take place in the Tenterden Club on Friday
evening. The number of Morris and
other folk dance teams attending the Festival over the weekend is now pushing
50 so the Town will be echoing to the sound of sticks clashing, bells ringing
bells and clogs stamping. Full details
of all events and guests are to be found in the big free souvenir programme
available from Tenterden Gateway, festival venues, Ashford
TIC or by post in the next few days. It is worth noting that despite the
recession ticket sales are already up on this time last year and continue to
sell well so don’t delay, get yours now.

The festival guest list
includes some of the best know names on the English traditional folk scene
such as Brian
Peters. Brian is
one of the great all-rounders; a compelling singer, a top squeezebox player and a skilled guitarist. He is one of the country’s
best anglo-concertina players and is just as good on melodeon on which he
will be running a workshop in St Mildred’s Church Hall on Saturday. He is also internationally-known as a
singer of traditional ballads. Brian
has played most of the major folk festivals in Britain,
Australia, New Zealand, USA
and Canada, as well as
touring extensively in Europe. He’s
collaborated with many British and American musicians.

Another
very different guest is Geoff Higginbottom
who is well known on the folk scene as a big man with a big voice and an even
bigger collection of traditional folk songs, mostly with sing-a-long choruses
or refrains. Geoff is also one of the
three members of “Three Sheets to the
Wind” and will be taking part in the popular sea songs and shanties
session in the Tenterden Club on Saturday.
Details of all the other guests can also be found in the free souvenir
programme.
