Crook of Devon (Pop. 699 including
Drum)
Winner
of
"Best Kept Village"
in the County of Kinross
August 2000 & 2001.
(The person who was the driver behind encouraging the Village to enter, Jack Fraser, has died and they are hoping to replace him)
. .....The Crook of Devon is situated on
the A977 about 6 miles south west of Kinross, and was famous in
the 17th century for its cattle fairs and witch burnings. In fact
down the road at the side of the Institute on the right hand side
is a field called 'LAMBLAIRES' and in the north west corner is
the place where the "witches" were first strangled and
then burned at the stake.
.....One of the focal points of village life is the Fossoway
Parish church whose extension and church hall was finished in
early 2000 AD. During the construction of the hall a time capsule
was placed in the foundations containing the story of the life of
the church in the 20th century. Also the churchyard contains one
of the few 'Hearse Houses' still left in
Scotland, and there is some discussion about restoring it but,
like all things now, money will be problem!
Fossoway St Serfs and Devonside Church
.....The Inn is another of the focal points along with the Fossoway Store & Post Office and the Village Institute and in Waulkmill you will find the new football pitch and children's playground provided by "FLAG".
