Rumbling Bridge
.....Rumbling
Bridge is situated on the A823 at it's junction with the A977 in
the county of Perth & Kinross.
.....Rumbling Bridge takes it's name from the strange double
bridge that crosses a narrow gorge and also the sound of the
water rushing through the gorge makes a constant rumbling sound
that pervades the still of the natural peace of the gorge.
.....In 1713 the original
Rumbling Bridge was built by William Gray, a mason from
Saline. The span, 22 feet long and 11 feet wide, is 86 feet above
the water. The bridge had no parapets. The upper arch was built
in 1816 to give greater width and, by raising the level of the
road, removed the steep gradients down to the old bridge. The new
bridge is 120 feet above the water.
..... There is a pathway around the gorge which gives access to
the beautiful scenery and good views of the bridge itself. The
pathway was built and is maintained by various branches of the
armed forces. (At the moment there is no official car park as the
Nursing Home and the Council have not come to an agreement).

Rumbling Bridge, near Dollar. At Rumbling Bridge there is a series of paths that allow you to look into the ravine, and at the waterfall and bridge. It is so laid out that you could probably take your granny.................... Formed by a burn running off the Ochil hills, an easier, short walk in an Ochil Glen with something of the chasmic experience and the added delight of the unique double bridge built in 1713. There's a point here at the end of one of the walk-ways under the bridge where you are looking into a Scottish jungle landscape as the Romantics imagined. Near Powmill on A977 from Kinross (junction 6, M90). At Powmill there is the Powmill Milkbar serving excellent home-made food. Open seven days until 5pm (6pm weekends). And the Gartwhinzean Hotel (Advertised as the Swallow Kinross), less than a mile on, has superior bar food all day. (Kept up to date by the Web-Master) |
