A research report completed for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by Manchester

This report presents the results of several months' research into available evidence relating to the environmental impacts that occur in the life cycle of a range of food products, particularly from studies applying Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques. The project, managed by Chris Foster - EuGeos' Consultant and MBS researcher - reports evidence of this kind for a range of commonly consumed food products (basic carbohydrate foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat products, fish and other basic protein foods, drinks - alcoholic and non-alcoholic, mixed products, snacks and other items). The aim of the report was to inform government policy development to reduce the environmental impacts of food consumed in the UK and to help develop information on more sustainable food choices for the food industry, public procurers and consumers. The analysis draws out the relatively high environmental impacts associated with red meat and dairy products, and finds evidence that organic and/or local food systems do not offer complete resolution of all the environmental challenges posed by existing food production and consumption systems.
