While I have been a parent governor I have read a number of books about education and sometimes written notes and reviews on what I have read. To get an overview of some ideas on education have a read of some of the reviews below.

Theories of Childhood by Carol Garhart Mooney

This is a very readable introduction into the theories of Dewey, Montessori, Erikson, Piaget and Vygotsky making a plain between how these theories can inform and improve practice.

Education and Peace by Maria Montessori

A series of essays about education and peace given by Maria Montessori mostly during the build up to the Second World War.

Two Worlds of Childhood: USA and USSR by Urie Bronfenbrenner

This was a study published in the 1960s on how children in the USA and USSR were brought up. It is a fascinating book and also contains details of Albert Bandura's important studies on the influence of the media on children.

Educational Psychology: Principles and Applications by Jeanne Ellis Ormrod

Details various theories about learning such as Behaviourism.

Models of Cognitive Development by Ken Richardson

This book looks at five different models for understanding how children learn: nativist, associationist, constructivist, sociocognitive and mixed models (e.g. nativism with constructivism, nativist with associationism etc).

Managing Misbehaviour in Schools by Tony Charlton and Kenneth David

This book reviews of five of the major theoretical models encountered in this field.

Psychology: An Introduction by Nicky Hayes and Sue Orrell

This is a very broad book covering many aspects of psychology.

Multicultural Education in White Schools by Sally Tomlinson

This book is a useful summary of multiculturalism in education up to 1990.

Multicultural Mathematics: Teaching Mathematics from a Global Perspective by David Nelson, George Gheverghese Joseph and Julian Williams

Interesting ideas for teaching mathematics.
