Personal Chronicle Pages

Personal Chronicle Pages link together records relating to a person. These first example editions are restricted to census records but will expand to include all birth, marriage and death related records.

Not every person will have a chronicle page only males who were known to have children (or females from which a STEER line is descended). Chronicle pages will list spouses, partners and children.

Census records are linked to Personal Chronicle Pages.

There are only a few chronicles at present which were chosen to test the feasibility of having such a resource. The link is on the Home Page.

25 April 2004 (Partial)

Added UK General Register Office (GRO) birth index entries for 1840-1849 inclusive. There have been some corrections to the details of the Registration Districts, it will be an on-going process to verify and complete all the information for these.

7 April 2004 (Minor)

A couple of problems have been corrected both relating to the 1851 census.

The household of William and Amelia Steer in Clapham, Ref HO 107/1576 Folio 32a, wasn't showing any occupants or that they were in Clapham.

The name indexes could link a person to the wrong household where the folio was identical to that in another piece, e.g. HO 107/1600 Folio 213a and HO 107/1605 Folio 213a.

31 March 2004 (Major)

The major addition to the web site today is the 1851 census for Surrey, England, together with some enhancements to the census index pages. The provisional web site home page has been replaced with a proper one. Some spelling errors have been corrected where these have been drawn to my attention, please continue to notify me of any issues with any of the pages.

There is a lot more information and descriptive text in this release. There is a limit to the amount that one can proof read one's own writing so I'm expecting that there will be some errors. Please let me know of any mistakes that you see by using the "Report a Problem" link at the top of each page.

1851 Census in Cornwall

HO 107/1897/231a
HO 107/1898/301a-b
HO 107/1900/469a
HO 107/1904/647a
HO 107/1911/249b

1851 Census in Surrey

There were a lot of Steers in Surrey in 1851, which is not surprising as the county then covered a large area of what is now London and Surrey was known to have a high Steer population. The coverage of the census for Surrey on this web site is very high but it cannot be claimed yet to be complete although it may be very near that. It has yet to be established that the county has been entirely surnamed indexed and that I've had access to all these indexes. It was found that the census districts did not follow the county borders so that some small parts of adjacent counties, Middlesex and Sussex, are also included. For the same reason it is possible that some small parts of Surrey near to the borders are not yet covered.

The census county index page provided on this site now indicates the coverage for each county, more details are given on the several county pages. It was necessay to separate the STEER census surname index into individual first name letters as the list is now large, in future it will be necessary to break this list down further as more entries are added. People with the same first name are now indexed by their age starting with the oldest, also the different variations of the spelling or abbreviation of a first name are treated as the same, e.g. Wm, Willm, William all appear togther in descending age. This only currently applies where the variant spelling starts with the same letter, Catheriine and Katherine, for example, would be listed separately.

There was a problem with the census piece and folio index page for each county. It was possible for folios not to be aligned with the place addresses to the right. This has been corrected but it has been necessary to truncate place adresses where these were long, the addresses on the actual household transcriptions are presented in full.

Home Page

The home page is being prepared to link to the main topics. There is a lot to do before all the topics can begin to be published but they well be introduced over the next few months. The topic index is immediately below the main welcome picture and topics that 'light up' when the mouse pointer moves over them are active.
