Occupation:1851 Census-Farmer of six acres.He was a crofter.His croft was at
Skelbomuir about three miles north of Dornoch.I have photograph of his grave.
1851 living with wife, son Thomas and daughter Janet
1859 Daughter Janets M/C describes John as a tailor but her D/C in 1910
describes him as a crofter.
OPR Dornoch:19Mar1813.John Mackay,Achvandrew Moor was lawfully married to
Ch. Bannerman there.
John probably moved from Achvandra to Skelbo c.1815/18.
1841 Census:Living at Skelbomuir with his wife Christina and his daughters
Janet,Marion and Helen.Described as a tailor.Born in Sutherland.
As John Mackay died before 1855 he did not have a death certificate and
therefore I do not know his parents. However I do know that he was 64 or 65 when he died and therefore born about 1787/8 in Sutherland and most probably in Dornoch Parish.
According to the Dornoch OPR three John Mackays were born in 1787/8.They were
John Mackay b.5Nov1788 at Skebo which is in the south of the parish. He had six siblings all born at Skebo.Parents Robert Mackay/Lillias McKennzie married 11Jan1786 place not known.

date and place of marriage not known.
I have decided to choose the John Mackay b.22Aug1788 because he and his sisters were all born Skelbo and Achvandrae in the north of the parish. Also John was married in 1813 at Achvandrew Moor which is the same place as Achvandrae.

Christina Bannerman

She died at Badninish in a house where also lived her grandson John Ross who

May have gone to Canada according to Helen Mackay,grand-daughter of Janet Mackay.

George McKay

OPR Dornoch:14Apr1818.George lawful son to John Mackay and Christian
Benderman in Muir of Skelbo was baptised.
!Now have George Mackay's death entry.
George McKay , Tailor, age 91 parents John McKay & Christian Bannerman, died Stawell Victoria 13 May 1909, chronic bronchitis & senile decay. Unmarried, in Victoria about 55 years, buried Stawell Cemetry. Witnesses to burial: Alfred Wither, John Hall, householders.
This agrees well with the census entries 1841 for Geo. Mackay age 20 apprentice in house of George Sutherland, Dornoch Burgh, Tailor. The 1851 entry Skelbo Street has George Mackay Tailor age 30 head of house, b. Dornoch, with sister Helen age 19 unm. house servant b. Dornoch. No entry for 1861 matches this, so he must have emigrated around 1854. I have several George Mckay entries in the emigrant list around this date and will try to sort out which is our George.
