1841 Census 59/1/15 Milltown.David living with his brothers Alexander,Donald,Simon and John,all unmarried.David was a farmer.
1851 Census 59/6/6 Milltown of Rosehaugh,Avoch.David, unmarried, miller and farmer of 16 acres land.Living with brothers Donald,Simon and John all unmarried with no occupation given so probably millers and farmers. Also in the house five servants one of whom Catherine Young age 32,unmarried,born Inverness-shire David married in 1853.
1861 Census Miltown of Rosehaugh and Pitfour not found.
1871 Census Pitfour had reappeared but did not seem to be a farm.I think Pitfour was now a hamlet of three houses.Three families lived there, headed by a cattleman,a shepherd and a domestic servant.
In the middle of the 19th.century the owners of the Avoch estates did a lot of improvements.Small farms disappeared, they were either joined onto larger farms or several small farms were joined together to make a larger farm. With the innovations in agriculture a larger farm was more productive and more profitable.Sometime between 1851 and 1861 Miltown of Rosehaugh was probably demolished and the families living there had to leave. The ground that Miltown stood on was probably incorporated into the grounds of Rosehaugh House.Pitfour farm was probably added to Easter Suddie.
It would appear that David Young opened a grocers shop in Fortrose. His brother Simon by 1854 had opened a shop in Cromarty and the emigrated to Canada in 1871.
According to Fowler Young,a Donald Young went to Montreal and two other brothers ended up in New York. They might have been John and also Donald.I think all the sons born to Robert Young and Janet Leitch would have been to old by 1871 to emigrate. What became of William,Robert,James,Hector and Alexander?None of them are in Scotland in the 1881 Census.By 1881 they may all have been dead.
Occupation:Grocer.Wife Catherine.
Will SRO. SC.25/44/7 Pages 515-7.
David Young did not leave a will.An inventory of his estate was recorded at
Tain on the 21May1862 and signed by his widow Catherine Young. At Fortrose on
the 7May1862 before a Justice of the Peace,Catherine Young was sworn and
