William Hamilton

Occupation:Clerk
Served in World War 1 in Royal Field Artillary in Egypt and Palestine.Was at all the battles for Gaza from March to October 1917.When war finished he was at Tripoli in the Lebanon.From beginning of war to about the end of 1916 he was stationed on the Firth of Forth.Saw the Lion returning from the Battle of Jutland.

Sometime after 1871 he probably went to Stranraer and learned to be a joiner.

Fairley Wilson McQuaker

Her father was probably William McQuater a farmers son from Craigenholly, a neighbouring farm.Her parents did not marry.When Fairley was born William was 17 and her mother Agnes was 23.Fathers name not on her birth certificate.Her birth was registered byThomas Wilson,her grandfather.On her marriage certificate to John Hamilton,William McQuaker(farmer)is described as her reputed father.
Address in my fathers notebook:Mrs McQuater,Gleniron,Glenluce.
!Cause of death-Cerebral embolism.Her husband signed death certificate.She died four days after the birth of Flora.

Fairleys mother was Agnes Wilson and her mother was Agnes Davidson.Agnes
Davidson had a first cousin called Fairly Cunningham Welsh.Was Fairley Wilson
called after her?

McKerlie,Campbells Croft,were legally proclaimed before this congregation
in order to marriage and no objection being offered they were accordingly
married at Campbells Croft on 23April1849 by the Rev.Mr.McDowall,Old Luce.
Dailly sacred music society formed 24Apr1828.Minutes to 1832.No mention of
Joseph Hamilton.
1851 Census - Living Main Street,Glenluce with his wife Agnes McKerlie.Teacher of church music.Living next door was Charles Kelly age 43 born Stoneykirk,unmarried,also a teacher of church music.
1861 Census whereabouts unknown but not with wife and family.
1871 Census - Living 207 St. Vincent St.,Glasgow with his second wife Esther
McCallum and his children Anne(17),Hugh(6) and Agnes(3).He was a vanman.
Also had a boarder Esther Dick(6) born in Campsie.Her parents were Andrerw Dick and Agnes McCallum so she was probably boarding with her aunt.

1851 Census-Living Main Street,Glenluce with his 1st.wife Mary and four of his children Margaret,Alex,Elizabeth and Jess.
1861 Census-Living Main Street,Glenluce with his 2nd.wife Agnes Wilson and eight of his children Margaret,Alexander,Elizabeth,Jessie,John,Mary,Thomas and Agnes.He now employed one man.
1871 Census-As 1861 but no mention of employing anybody.Children in house are Jessie,John,Mary,Thomas,Agnes,Helen,James and William.
1881 Census-Living Main Street,Glenluce with six of his children.His son
Thomas(age 22)is a blacksmith and his daughter Agnes(age 20) is a dressmaker.

Newspaper:Galloway Advertiser 30Apr1857.At Glenluce on the 14th.inst.,by the
Rev.McDowall,Mr.James McWilliam,blacksmith to Agnes Wilson,Whitecairn.

When James McWillaim married Agnes Wilson he already had seven children by his 1st.wife Mary McClumpha who died 1856.Cause of her death is given as haemorrage previous to delivery
!James McWilliams death certificate was signed Nellie McWilliam,daughter.This
would be my grandmother Helen. No will.


Agnes Wilson

Agnes Wilson had an illegitimate daughter Fairley,born 26Jan1855 at Whitecairn
The child's father was possibly William McQuaker,a local farmer's son living at Craigenholly near Whitecairn.William was 17 and Agnes was 22.Probably because of their ages they did not marry.
Agnes married James McWilliam 14Apr1857 at Whitecairn.
1891 Census- Living at 43 Fielding Street,Liverpool with four of her children
Thomas,a blacksmith,Agnes,a dressmaker,James,a police constable and William,a
grocer.
1895 living in Glasgow.See son Thomas.
!D/C signed by J.McWilliam,daughter-in-law,6 Broomhill Dr.Partick West,
Glasgow.Probably wife of William Wallace McWilliam.She died of Brights disease
which is a disease of the kidneys.
!Wigtown Free Press.27May1909.Death.At North Strand Street,Stranraer on the
23rd.inst.Agnes Wilson,relict of the late James McWilliam,Glenluce,advanced in
years.
She did not leave a will.


Thomas McWilliam

!Wigtown Free Press.12Sep1895.Death.At 43 Park Street,Glasgow on the
29th.ult after a lingering illness borne with christian patience and resignation,Thomas,
son of the late James McWilliam,blacksmith,Glenluce,aged 33years.
Cause of death - Pulmonary tuberculosis.He was a bachelor.His mother Agnes
Wilson was staying at the same address.
1881 Census - He was living in Glenluce with his father and working as a
blacksmith.
The lair in Craigton Cemetery was bought by his brother William who was also
staying at 43 Park St.Certificate No.9104.Internment No.34694.Cost of
internment 15/-

1871 Census - Still living at Redgate with Agnes and Helen.He was a cooper.
Helen was a dressmaker.
Cause of death-Old age and frailty.No medical attendant.Helen Hamilton,his
grand-daughter,signed the death certificate.She was the illegitimate daughter
of Josephs eldest son James.He did not leave a will.

employing two servants.He was living with his wife Ann ,and nine of his children Mary,Hugh,
Margaret,Ann,James,Esther,Elisabeth,Jannet and Robert.James now gave his place of birth as Old Luce.
1861 Census-Campbells Croft.Farm of 37 acres Scotch.Living with his wife Annie and children Margaret,James,Easter,Elizabeth,Agnes,Jannet and Robert.Also in the house were his grandchildren John and Annie Hamilton who,were the children of his daughter Agnes who was married to Joseph Hamilton.James gives his place of birth as Stoneykirk Parish.
1871 Census - Whitecairn,Old Luce Parish.Farm of 147 acres of which 137 acres
are arable employing two labourers.Living with his wife,three children Robert,Esther and Janet and
three grand-children,John Hamilton(19),Mary Higgins(5) and Robert McLelland(1)
Also living in the house was a 15year old girl described as a general servant.James once again gave his place of birth as Stoneykirk Parish.
1881 Census - Whitecairn.Living with his wife and four of his grandchildren,
Ann and Mary Higgins and Hugh and Robert McKerlie who all worked on the farm.James gave his place of birth as Stoneykirk Parish.
1891 Census- Clashmaew Cottage,Inch Parish.Retired farmer living with his
second wife Martha Horner.He had married Martha Horner in 1883 when he was 76
and she was 19! M.R.Clashmaew 062593.
