Provost's Tribute to Late Mr.Hamilton
Sympathetic reference to the death of Mr.James Hamilton was made by Provost R.E.Caughie at Stranraer Town Council meeting on Monday evening.
Provost Caughie said it was with a feeling of deep regret that he referred to the death of Mr.Hamilton, one of the council's oldest and longest reigning members.Mr.Hamilton was in many ways a remarkable person. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Engineers and played his part for the first half century of his life as a soldier and a sailor..He fought in the Boer War and later traversed the waters of the world as a ship's carpenter. In 1914 he rejoined the Royal Engineers and saw service in the East
In 1936,Mr Hamilton sought new conquests and contested a council election and won his seat.In 1950 he did not seek re-election but in 1954 the urge to serve the public prompted him to contest a by-election when he wa again successful.Mr.Hamilton was a man of strong opinions and was forthright in his approach to council matters..During his 20 years as a councillor he served his colleagues and the ratepayers of Stranraer in an exemplary manner.
The Provost said the council's deepest sympathy went out to his family and friends and he was sure it was the wish of the council that they record in the minutes an expression of their sincere appreciation of the great work caried out by their late colleague during his 20 years servive on the town council.
