Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John Crawford

Occupation:1916- sewing machine factory worker.

James Erskine

Occupation:1901- wine merchant.
From Janette Erskine Cochrane Feb2003 I also asked her about the names of all the children of James and Maggie. Here they are in birth order * Jane "Jeanie" * Elizabeth " Lizzie" * Margaret " Maggie" * James * Christina " Lily" [ she had a twin sister who died] * Janet " Jessie " { My grandmother ) * Mary * William * Marion " Minnie" * Florence " Flossie" Also James Erskine ( my great grandfather) in addition to running pubs ( bit I think not necessarily at the same time ) was a master printer with his own printing business in Gourock. He was the printer of the Greenock Telegraph. He was also one of the founders of the Greenock Co-operative Society . He was its first secretary ( there is a book celebrating I think either 20 or 30 years of the Society .. I have a copy of this but its still in Scotland at my parents house which gives details and includes a photograph of him.) He gave up his pub in Kilbarchan " the Glenleven "in 1935 the year before he died.

William Wallace McWilliam

26th.ult. by the Rev.Thomas Sommerville,Blackfriars Parish Church assisted by
the Rev.J.William Butler,William Wallace McWilliam to Jeanie, eldest daughter
of James Erskine, wine and spirit merchant,Glasgow.
With my parents I used to visit his widow,Jane Erskine,in Kilbarchan. She died
in 1953.
Dead before 1930/1.See wifes notes.
From Janette Erskine Cochrane Feb2003
I asked my mother last night whether Jeanie and William had any children. Her reply " Jeanie lost 2 boys... at least one was stillborn." She is not sure how long the other boy lived but she thought not long.( possibly there will be a death certificate for this boy?)the other boy might be in the still birth register?? ( I would have to re check when the still birth register started ... perhaps it didn't start until much later.. I have a feeling it only started in 1930 ) My mother thinks that Jeanie's husband died in either 1914 or 1915 ( but this was not connected with the war) They lived in the Broomhill area of Partick at this time.

Jeanie Erskine

Usual address on death certificate- 15 Parkview,Kilbarchan.
Same address about 1927
Intimation of death not found in Glasgow Herald or Evening Times.Brother William of Gourock registered her death.
James Erskine of Norse Road,Scotstoun had a pub in Oxford Street but he probably moved to 25 New St.Kilbarchan about 1923 where he had a pub and three other houses at same address. All in 1922/3 Valuation Roll.
Sasine Abridgement 1929 No.1510.Jeanie sold a house at 25 New Street.Abond had been recorded 12May1925 by Jeanie Erskine or McWilliam, widow for £270.
James was alive 1930 but by 1940 the pub at New St. was no longer owned by the Erskines.
Jeanie was a widow in 1925 but it would appear the the Hamilton ironmonger at 1381 Dumbarton Road was sold to a James Erskine 1917/18 who had a house in Norse Road,Scotstoun. Was he a son of the publican? Why did William McWilliam not get the ironmonger instead of his wifes brother? Not interested,no money or already dead.?
