William Murdoch

Will in Scottish Documents.Testate.30Jan1983.Value £1501.Executors two local farmers.
Cause of death tuberculosis.
A brief summary is -executor james paxton
1. stock crop and other effects of farm glenside, sold at auction ----- total 1266 pounds
articles sold privately--------------------------------------- 234 pounds ---- total 1501 pounds
less debts 1174 pounds
total nett value of personal estate- 327 pounds
main debtors--- robert kerr-mahaar------ 515 pounds less life policy 150 pounds----- 365
mrs mcmeckan-st. mary's croft-------------------------------------------- 305
sir.a.agnew ------------------------------------------------------------------- 229
servants wages ---------------------------------------------------------------- 53
r. mccalmont&sons-belfast----------------------------------------------------- 55
Not much else is stated except he left a widow but no lawful issue surviving, mrs agnes murdoch or wilson was left athe sum of 327 pounds to be paid as seen fit by the executor, no mention of any other murdochs in the will- it also states that the deceased had no heritable land or estate in the u.k. one other item of interest in the debts is the fee for funeral expenses includes a cost of 2 pounds for free press - i assume this would be the local newspaper- ie auction add , maybe a death notice or obituary?
i looked in my 1881 census and it seems that james paxton is williams next door neighbour, robert kerr is a farmer as is the mcmeckan's who are not far away from glenside- sir andrew agnew is listed as a baronet?-lochnaw castle-leswalt-wigtown, this agrees with the address on one of the smaller debts to sir a agnew. by the look of things i think william may have been in a fair amount of debt and would not have been farming for much longer.
