Dear Fraser (I have added to and updated this mail since I started writing it a couple of weeks back.)
I must apologise for taking so long to reply, but I have been busy with work and house renovations, but I have also spent a little time putting together the info from you with what I had and also I have made contact with relatives in the South Island here in New Zealand. So its been a very exciting time lately. Infact one family I've contacted would be related to you also. I have also done a bit of research on when William came to NZ. I found every Kelly in NZ except the one I wanted until recently.
William travelled from Glasgow on 23 June 1858 to arrive at Port Chalmers NZ on 23 September 1858 on the ship JURA. The passenger lists state he was a Cabin Passenger. There is no other info given unfortunately. He did not travel with any other Kelly relatives. (On the same ship was a steerage passenger James FERGUSON, could be the father of Annie).
In the years 1878 to 1880 there were alot of Kelly's arrived in NZ from SCT, I am trying to piece together if they are related or not.
Since my first mail to you I have gone back over all my own info and discovered I was wrong about William and Annie both coming to NZ after their marriage. I had the correct information all along I just didn't read it again before mailing you. Shame on me.
William b: 1832 New Luce SCT, came to NZ 1858, he married #1 Helen Kilgour 1866 North Molynuex Otago NZ. Helen died 1874. So far I have no record of children to William and Helen, that is as yet. I will keep digging.
William married #2 Annie Fergusson on 8 May 1879 at Stirling, North Molynuex , Otago NZ. (I thought it was Stirling in Scotland...I was wrong). (I have both marriage certs). Their son Charles Edgar born 23 May 1881 Kaitangata, Balclutha, Otago NZ . (I have this birth cert).
It has been a few years since I started the Kelly research and a few more years since I really searched it at all, I may be a bit rusty I think.
I am unsure when Annie came to NZ, but I have a few leads to follow up when I get the time. I have the scottish census records for Annie and her family of 1851 and 1871. I have made contact with Ferguson family members, so hopefully we can determine their arrival in NZ. I have since found Annie's arrival in NZ. On the ship Invercargil left Glasgow 12th July 1878 to arrive in Port Chalmers (Otago) NZ on 2nd October 1878. Annie was on the SIngle womens passenger list at age 26yrs listed as a Domestic Servant from Ayr SCT.
Intersting though is that Annie's parents were James FERGUSON and Annie HAMILTON. Could be another connection perhaps. I found alot of info on the Scottish IGI and census records etc etc , that I spent time putting together and coming up with the correct family units.
