Settling Down ?

The house is built, the garden planted and my son is born. We called him Mark. Plenty of space for him to grow up in. The house was at the bottom of the hill which led up to a national park. Shotover, which the name of the park, was a beautiful area at the top of the hill from where you could look down upon the spires of Oxford. The immediate district was known as Headington Quarry. a Cotswold stone village. The Village bakery was at the other end of the road and Mark would ride his Tricycle to fetch the fresh bread.

Now, his son Paul, is riding his bike alongside Mark in Brighton. Paul is a very willing chap and his frequently used phrase is " I'll do it". Never any doubt who about his ability to do almost anything. Perhaps he too is as a naive as I once was. I truly believe that I can do anything.  Subject, of course, to my physical ability. I do not restrict this to myself alone. I believe just about anyone is capable of doing most things.

Just as Paul has his phrase " I'll do it", I have a phrase " I have done it ". It has been a cause for merriment  amongst my friends when I mention one or another of the jobs I have done. Looking back at this time in my life, in my mid-twenties, what had I already done? Delivered meat from my father's shop, telegram messenger boy, police cadet, telephone switchboard operator, wages, accounts, estate management, land drainage, hedging, ditching, colvert construction, fencing, house design, builder and  decorator.

The next working phase in my life would become a just as varied. I was never given the chance to become bored. At the same time I was not given the chance to sit back to enjoy the house and garden that I had constructed.
