Here is a picture of Eagle Gates kindly donated by Phil Shimmon. You can still see the remains on the right just before you turn off the Hollesley road for Boyton coming from Woodbridge.

Phil Shimmon says: The gates were the entrance to Manor Farm which at one time was owned by Mr Burness from Woking in Surrey, this would have been in the early twenties when my grandfather, William Whyard (see picture under Frogs Hall), worked for Mr Burness as gamekeeper on the estate.

At some time the farm was sold to Mr Paul and during the early part of WW11 (1941-42) the thatched part of the farm was burnt down due to some military exercises on the common sparking it off.

I was told by my mother that people would throw stones and rocks at the gates during the war because the eagles were a Nazi symbol and infact you can see that one of the eagles heads is missing in the photo.
