CONTACT February 2005 Newsletter for the Parishes of HOLLESLEY ALL SAINTS & BOYTON with CAPEL From The Rectory, Wednesday 8th February is Ash Wednesday, and this year it is about as early as it can get giving us Easter Day on March 27th. According to my list, the earliest we can have Easter is March 23rd in 2008 and the latest we can have Easter is on April 25th but we need to wait until 2038 for that! The reason is in the season. Easter was originally an agricultural celebration and its date was (and still is) determined by the phase of the moon. As far as I remember, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the 21st of March. Easter is about new beginnings and to prepare ourselves for Easter we go through the 40 days of Lent and we ask God to help us make a new beginning by thinking about how we sometimes get things wrong in our lives. It is never too late to turn over a new leaf and start afresh. The special prayer for Ash Wednesday puts it like this: Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new hearts that we, recognising our failings, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, remission and forgiveness, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. Yours Geoffrey For services this month click on February Services You are welcome to join with any of the following: NEW RURAL DEAN Congratulations to the Revd Pauline Stentiford who has succeeded Robert Clifton as our new Rural Dean. She was commissioned at Melton Church on 16thJanuary. We wish Robert and Sian Clifton well in his retirement as the Wilford Team Rector. CAROL SINGING - HOLLESLEY VILLAGE We collected £476.00 a fantastic amount. Thank you to all who joined us to sing and to those who gave so generously. Money was divided between our Church and St Elizabeths Hospice, Ipswich. Unfortunately, some evenings there were very few singers and I feel that, unless we can guarantee a minimum of six, we may not be able to sing the same number of evenings next Christmas therefore not covering as much of the village. Joan Butcher SPECIAL PEAL OF BELLS A peal of bells will be rung at 2pm on February 6th at All Saints' Church, Hollesley in celebration of Don Prices 75th birthday and 60 years membership of the College Youths Bellringing Society. Fred Stentiford
