St Andrew's Church possesses a very unusual tower staircase made of septaria. Septaria are formed around a decaying aniumal/fossil that as a result of anaerobic biological action produces the septarian nodules. These are formed from a mixture of calcium carbonate and clay minerals. Septaria has been used since Roman times, for instance in the Roman wall at Colchester and the Temple of Claudius (Colchester). In medieval Britain it was also employed in Colchester , Framlingham and Orford castles and many churches, but not in a staircase such as the one in Boyton church.
