Haydn: The Seven Last Words of ChristThis unique service, initiated by a Canon of Cadiz but now rarely celebrated, will be led by The Right Reverend Clive Young, Bishop of Dunwich with music performed by the Sudbourne Ensemble string quartet. In 1785 Haydn was commissioned by the Canon of Cadiz Cathedral to write seven slow movements describing each of the last words from the cross. The piece begins with a prelude after which the Bishop would pronounce the first of the words, for instance ‘Father forgive them for they know not what they do’, and follow them with his discourse on that theme. After this came the first slow movement describing the preceding words. This was the pattern until the seventh sermon on ‘Into thy hands, Lord, I commend my spirit’ and slow movement after which Haydn completes the work with a Finale of loud fast music depicting the earthquake and renting of the temple curtain. Because this is a devotional occasion it would not be appropriate for the Ensemble to expect remuneration. However, as my colleagues make their living from playing their instruments they will no doubt be turning away offers of concert work in order to participate in this special day. If any of you would like to sponsor my three colleagues on this occasion, please phone me on 01394 450823. We hope the very special nature of this service will encourage you to join us and look forward to seeing you in St Bartholomew. Jim McLeod
