Julia was born in Ashton Under Lyne, Manchester, Lancashire, UK.

She was known as Joanna, and could not read or write.

In 1865 she married in Ashton under Lyne, UK where Warwick her husband was stationed as a private in the 3rd Dragoons/3rd Hussars. She was working on the machines in the cotton/wool industry at this time.

In 1871 she lived in Chobham, in 1881 in Woking, and 1901 in Portsmouth.

She died in Portsmouth, and is buried in the city's Kingston cemetery. Her name was spelt McEvoy on some papers.
