Winnie's History

Winnie was captured with 5 orcas: Magnus*, Canuck*, Kona 2*, Kandu 5* and Hoi Wai*. All 6 orcas were sent to an aquarium in the Netherlands, Harderwijck Dolphinarium. All orcas were bought by SeaWorld, but only Canuk*, Kona 2* and Kandu 5* went to a SeaWorld Park. Winnie and Hoi Wai* were sent to Windsor Safari Park. Canuk* died at Harderwijck Dolphinarium. Winnie and Hoi Wai* lived together at Windsor, until Hoi Wai* was purchased by Ocean Park in Hong Kong, in 1979. Winnie lived alone for 2 years, until Windsor bought her a new companion, Nemo*, who was also from Iceland. But Nemo* was aggressive with her, and the two didn't get on very well. Winnie and Nemo*  were underfed so that they would cooperate in training sessions and shows. After Nemo's death Winnie became depressed and lonely, and her only companions were dolphins. Luckily for Winnie, she was sent to SeaWorld Orlando on 26th October 1991, because a new law had passed in the UK that cetaceans were no longer kept there. Winnie met Gudrun*, Katina and Taima during her stay at SeaWorld Orlando. Winnie, who was smaller than Katina and Gudrun*, was picked on by them. In a total of three years at Orlando, Winnie was moved to Ohio, where she became a tank mate for Kayla. Kayla was a gently orca, that Winnie got on well with. Winnie was dominant orca at SeaWorld Ohio, because tank mate Kayla was submissive. Together they lived at Ohio for 4 years until in 1999, they were transferred to SeaWorld San Antonio. Winnie became friends with dominate female, Haida 2*, and they shared dominance role together, she also became a second mother to her son, Kyuquot.

Winnie was also San Antonio's star performer. She is one of only a few whales who could do a complete 360 degrees back flip in the air. After Haida 2's* death, Winnie became depressed along with Kyuquot, but made up her suffering by tending to him. Winnie later died, from an infection, on April 11th 2002. During her stay at Windsor, Winnie swallowed things visitors through into her pool, which built up an infection.
