Philip Hargrave

Biography

Philip is the Chief Executive Officer and Network Director of the ICT Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN). He is responsible for identifying and directing activities aimed at bringing a competitive advantage to the UK by facilitating the development and take up of information and communications technologies and their adoption as key enablers in other industries. Funded by the Technology Strategy Board, the ICT KTN was formed in April 2011 to bring together the activities of the Digital Communications KTN, of which Philip had been CEO & Network Director since its establishment in 2008, and the previous Digital Systems KTN.

Philip received a BSc in Physics from the University of Bristol in 1971 and a PhD in Radio Astronomy from the University of Cambridge in 1975, where he continued as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cavendish Laboratory. In 1977 he joined the staff of Standard Telecommunications Laboratories (STL) in Harlow and embarked on a career in industrial R&D. His initially specialisations were in the theory and design of Global Positioning System (GPS) user equipment, and Adaptive Antenna algorithms and implementations. In 1992, following the acquisition of STC by Nortel, he was appointed Director, Radio and High Integrity Communications. He was subsequently Director, Next Generation Networks, in which capacity he established a team that developed and pioneered concepts that have now been universally accepted under the banner of Next Generation Networks, and led to Nortel's Voice over Packet product portfolio. In 2000 he was appointed Chief Scientist, Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA), a position he held until leaving Nortel in 2006.

Philip is a member off the British Computer Society's Engineering and Science Board. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the British Computer Society, the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered IT Professional, a Chartered Physicist and a Chartered Scientist..

Philip is Chairman of the Governing Council of Bishop's Stortford College, and Chairman and Secretary of the Friends of St James the Great, Thorley.
