For those of you who know me I do sometimes depart from the heavier side of Rock and delve into the lighter shade of the Rock Spectrum and on this particular evening we sampled the delights of an R&B 5 piece outfit from Market Harborough called “Midnight Blue”.
As a covers band they were good, covering the likes of The Blues Brothers, ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and The Stones as well as most welcomingly some of their own material.
This was a mellow evening in which there were a number of real little gems to be had and no one could doubt these lads sincerity and enjoyment of what they did.
For a band that had been around the circuit since about 1998 their music still sounded quite fresh and alive and I must admit made a nice change for an evening listening to some great and timeless tracks that for many were the inspiration of what we now call Classic Rock.
It was also nice to hear a “real” Hammond Organ played so well by Danny Mattin who you could just tell had the music flowing through his veins which gave an unusual and appealing depth to their music though I must say that at times it drowned out some of the other instrumentation.
Although in fairness the sound limitations of the venue and PA is as often much to blame.
On Guitar was Peter Davies who played a mean guitar (both Fender & Gibson) offering us some impressive string work as did Pete Bray on Bass.
Bringing up the rear on Drums was Terry Doncaster playing a spirited and classy set of beats and percussion.
Finally out in front was Tony Goodman on lead vocals who gave us a laid-back and styled performance with some really warm and mellow vocal tones.
So all-in-all a good evening with some fine toe-tapping music.
Thanks chaps.
It was a pleasure.
