Closed Masters Meet held at The Welsh Institute of Sport, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
Saturday 5th November 2005

At the meet there were 44 existing best times broken and 11 new ones, 5 of these were set by Baz Owen from Arfon Masters entering an older age group. There was also 7 Welsh records broken.

In the Men's Backstroke events there were 4 best times beaten, and in the Women's there were 9 best times beaten. There was also 1 new best Time in each, achieved by Baz Owen from Arfon and Beti Williams from Swim Swansea. A new Welsh Record in the Men's 50m back stroke 55-59 yrs age group set by Eric Hodgson from Wrexham.

The Breaststroke events had 10 Best times beaten, 6 for Men and 4 for Women. A new Welsh Record in the Women's 100 breast stroke 80-84 yrs age group set by Viv Batten from CLAMS. Equal Welsh Record in the Men's 50m breast stroke 45-49 yrs age group set by Walter syrett from Pontypool.

In the Butterfly there were 2 Best times beaten in the Men's events and 4 Best times beaten in the Women's. 4 new best times were set by Baz Owen (3) and Garfield Thomas, Bridgend County (1) and in the Women’s events 2 by Edna Dilworth, Arfon Masters and Margaret Weare, Caldicot. A new Welsh Record in the Men's 50m fly 75-79 yrs age group set by Baz Owen, Arfon masters.

In the I.M. in the Men's there was 1 best time beaten and 1 new best time by Baz Owen and in the Women's events there was 1 best time beaten by Sarah Borley and 2 new best times set, (1) by Margaret Weare and (1) by Edna Dilworth.

Freestyle events had 6 beaten by the Men and 7 beaten by the Women. N ew Welsh Records in the Women's 50m free, 100 free and 100 IM in the 80-84 yrs age group set by Edna Dilworth, Arfon masters.

It was good to see Julie Crayford back in the swim of things. Unfortunately we missed Emily Godsall, who sent her love to everyone, as she was unable to compete because she had injured her leg in the Gym.

The fun relays took place at the end of the session, while the final times were calculated. Later awards were presented to the winners of the pentathlon in each age group. The refreshments were available just in time to watch, on television, the start of the Rugby International between Wales and New Zealand. In fact, a number of swimmers from Wrexham gained some trophies in the swimming before heading off to watch the game live in the Millennium Stadium.
