R1 is a large expanse of open grassland and includes the largest of the commons ponds Seven islands. The pond is very good for duck and wildfowl throughout the year, the best time being early morning before there is to much disturbance. The large area of grassland can be good for green woodpecker and kestrels regularly hunt here. The small patches of scrub can be good for whitethroat, blackcap and long tailed tit flocks.
