Leslie Hurry 1909 1978
Painter and theatre designer. Studied at St. John's Wood Art School and
RA Schools. From 1930 onwards he travelled extensively in Britain, France
and Ireland living on the results of commissions given by the owners of
large estates. In 1941 he began to exhibit at the Redfern Gallery, after
which he was commissioned by Robert Helpmann to design sets for his ballet,
Hamlet. This began Hurry's successful career as a theatre designer, working
with many companies in England and Canada. His work is in the collections
of V & A, Brighton Art Gallery and elsewhere. A retrospective exhibition
was held at the Minories, Colchester in 1987.
"Bri Du Marin" was painted during a visit to Brittany and is signed
and dated 1938. Provenance: The Artist's Estate
