Dexter Brown
or
De Bruyne ?

Under the pseudonym 'De Bruyne', Dexter Brown has departed from his trademark style of automobile art. In creating his personal vision of "The Way We Were" it has taken four years to accumulate nearly fifty paintings. Paying thoughtful homage to such masters as Renoir, Manet and Monet these scrupulously accurate works capture the idyllic life of the British and Continental leisured classes during the closing years of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries. An exhibition of these paintings took place in October 2001 at the John Noott Galleries, Broadway, Worcestershire. Arguably England's most picturesque village, what more fitting place to hold the first solo De Bruyne exhibition. Dexter was born in London in 1942. He studied at Harrow College of Art 1956-1960. His teachers included such respected painters as Ken Howard RA and Fred Cumin RA. His artistic career began as a freelance illustrator working for companies allied to the motor racing industry. He progressed to automobile paintings and received his first commission from Pininfarina in 1965. Recognition for his work began in 1967 with his solo exhibition at the Monte Carlo Galleries in Alexandria, VA. (USA) and subsequently through exhibitions at the Thackeray Gallery, London. He also exhibited at the RI and the RBA in London and was elected RI in 1967. During the early 1970's he painted and exhibited portraits of pop-stars including Suzi Quatro and David Bowie. In 1980 he was introduced to the automobile art world through Christie's Auction House in London and went on to exhibit at Auto Art in Connecticut, the Abarth Galleries and the Porsche Museum in Tokyo, and The Art Automobile Gallery in Paris. Dexter has been on the world automotive art scene for nearly three decades. His work, which in the past decade has evolved into a significant abstract expression of racing images, has been the subject of articles and exhibitions throughout Europe. The images he has created for Ferrari and Porsche have been featured in advertising, magazines and other forms of mass media for many years.

Simultaneously, Haynes Publishing are releasing The Art of Dexter Brown: written by Robert Edwards with a forward by Toyah Wilcox. ISBN 1-85960-695-4. Dexter will be present at the opening of the exhibition to sign copies of the book and perhaps give a little insight into his thoughts and feelings behind his paintings.
