Not wishing to bore you, I am only listing a few names in each section of the alphabet. I would however be pleased to receive any information on lesser known but interesting British artists who worked in the United Kingdom particularly during the first half of the 20th Century. ADAMS Alfred b. 1884 fl. 1907-1954
Painter, born in Birmingham. He worked mainly as a landscape and genre artist in water-colour. He lived in Birmingham and exhibited at the RBSA of which he was an associate member.

AINSWORTH George
Painter, studied at Bradford and Winchester Schools of Art, and as a postgraduate student at the RA Schools. He has held numerous exhibitions of both drawings and sculptures at various galleries including Plas Glyn-Y-Weddw, Llanbedrog, Gwynedd; Tegfryn Gallery, Anglesey, Chandler Gallery, Leyburn, Yorkshire and at the Denbigh Art Centre, Clwyd.

ALEXANDER Dorothy
Painter who trained at Dundee College of Art and Birmingham Polytechnic School of Art Education. She has exhibited in Scotland, Australia and England during the inter-war years and her group shows include RBSA.

ALLAN Nicol b. 1931
Painter, whose work is represented in collection of the Arts Council of Great Britain.

ALLEN Clare A. b.
Winner of Abbey Major Scholarship, 1956. Taught at St. Albans School of Art.

ATKINSON Julia b. 1943
Has screenprints in the Collection of the British Council.

AUMONIER Eric
Sculptor and a member of a family firm of architectural decorators run by his father William Aumonier. In 1928 he was one of the team of six sculptors who carved the Winds in St. James's Park Underground station. He also carved the Empire relief panels on the Daily Express Building, Fleet Street, London.

AUMONIER William fl. c. 1890
Sculptor, who studied at West London School of Art. He exhibited work at the RA, 1899-1900 and with his son Eric Aumonier ran the family business of architectural sculpting. He was responsible for the architectural decorations of the Victoria Law Courts, Birmingham, in the late 1880's.

AYRES Stanley d. 1996
Painter who attended the Royal College of Art during the 1930's.

BACON Marjorie May b. 1902
Printmaker, born at Ipswich, Suffolk she studied at Norwich Art School and later at RCA, obtaining her diploma in 1927. She exhibited at the RA and the NEAC.

BADCOCK Isabel Baynes fl. 1886-1929
Little known painter of miniature portraits and the daughter of the Dean of Ripon. She showed at the RA and RCamA.

BAILEY Alfred Charles b. 1883
Painter mainly in watercolours, he was born in Brighton and studied at Brighton School of Art and under Louis Grier in Cornwall. He exhibited at the Goupil GaIlery and Redfern Gallery and lived in St. Ives from 1909-19 where he was a member of the St. Ives Art Club.

CABLE William Lindsay fl. 1927-1951
Illustrator particularly of girl's stories whose work was seen in several books by Enid Blyton. Dundee based he showed at RSA.

Painter, who has work in the collection of the Arts Council of Great Britain.

CALTHROP Gladys fl. 1929-38
Theatre Designer who showed at London's Redfern Gallery.

DAKIN Rose Mabel fl. 1905-1932
Sculptor and painter of miniature portraits and figures in oil. Born in Warrington Cheshire. Married name Mrs C.A. Gayer Phipps under which she sometimes exhibited. She studied at Manchester School of Art and with Stanhope Forbes Newlyn Cornwall. She also lived in London, India, Australia and Dartmouth.

DALLAS Ann Chassar fl. 1925-40
Painter and lithograph who exhibited at Redfern Gallery and NEAC. She has a lithograph of Siamese kittens in Collection of British Council.

DANIEL Alice Laura b. 1892
Manchester based painter who studied with J. Paul Brinson and who showed at the British Watercolour Society
.

EADE Edward b. 1911
Painter and sculptor who studied painting a the Slade later turning to sculpture. Represented in the collection of the University of Warwick.

EADES STANLEY C. fl. 1910-1938
Eades was an etcher of architectural subjects, particularly churches. His first recorded etching was made in 1910. Apart from a year or two spent in London during the early 1920's he lived in Bristol, where Frost & Reed published his work.

EADON Willis 1870-1945
Little known painter, represented in the collection of Sheffield Art Gallery.

FAIRCLOUGH Bernard b. 1915
Painter, born Glossop, Derbyshire. Studied at Manchester School of Art. Member of Manchester Group and Manchester Society of Modern Painters.

FAITHFULL Leila b. 1898
Painter, born at Woolton, Liverpool who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art 1923-24, and at La Grande Chaumière in Paris. She exhibited at NEAC, RA, RBA, and at the Leicester Galleries on over fifty occasions. Her work is in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, Warwick University and was once in the collections Sir Kenneth Clark and Sir Edward Marsh. Represented Aberdeen Art Gallery.

FAWKES Irene fl. 1923-1935
Little known illustrator who was born in Chelmsford, Essex. She produced work for London Transport and he illustrations were reproduced in the magazine Commercial Art. A teacher at the Sir John Cass Technical Institute, in East London she was awarded a Silver Medal by the City and Guilds of London Institution.

GAISFORD R. G. 'Gais' DFC fl. 1930’s-60’s
Cartoonist who served as a wireless operator/air gunner in the RAF during World War II and was awarded a DFC. After the war he wrote and designed advertisements and drew cartoons for Punch, London Opinion, Tatler, Lilliput, Daily Mirror and Evening Standard.

GARBUT Joseph c. 1820-1902
Born in South Shields he painted landscapes, genre portraits and marines in oil and w/c. Worked as a glazier and painted in his are time.

GARDHAM Richard
Little known naïve painter. He paints portraits of unknown people in a style that is not characteristic of a primitive artist. His style is loose an impressionistic.

HACKING Frederic Sidney b .1873
Painter, born in Darwen Lancashire. Believed to have studied at the Harris Institute in Preston and the RCA, London. He was a teacher of art in Mexborough, Yorks.

HAGARTY Mary S. fl. 1882-1936
Painter, born in Canada. noted for her scenes of landscapes often with plough-horse. Lived in Liverpool and later in London. Exhibited many works at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

HAGUE Richard fl. 1908-1916
Landscape artist who lived near Llandudno. Exhibited many works at the RCamA.

INGHAM Charles Frederick 1879-1957
Painter, born at Dewsbury Yorkshire. He executed landscapes, flowers pieces and miniatures. Studied under Owen Bowen in Yorkshire and in London at the RCA.

IRWIN Greville d. 1946
Little known painter who lived most of his life in Leamington Spa. Exhibited chiefly at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

JACKSON Emily Frances 1850-1933
Little known painter born in Bromley, Kent. She exhibited at the RA, SWA, RBA, RI and in provincial galleries.

Etcher, who was involved with Norwich School of Art.

JACKSON Muriel 1901-1978
A portrait painter and wood engraver. Muriel Jackson was one of Noel Rooke’s earlier students at the Central School and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers from 1925.

KARDIA Caroline b. 1951
Painter, born London. Studied at St. Martin's School of Art, 1970-73, and RCA, 1974-77. First solo exhibition held at Felicity Samuel Gallery, 1977.

KELLY Frances
Painter, born in Ireland, Studied at Metropolitan School of Art, 1932, Dublin. Winner of Travelling Scholarship, Paris, she has work in the collection of Ulster Museum, National Gallery of Ireland.

KERMODE William fl. 1925-1934
An interesting wood engraver, linocutter and bookjacket designer. Studied at the Grosvenor School of Art. Occasionally exhibiting at Redfern Gallery, London. He had work reproduced in Radio Times and also has work in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

LACEY Constance Mary b. 1884
Painter, designer, illustrator and embroidress. Studied at Cope’s School of Painting and the RCA. Taught art in Ipswich.

LAMBART Alfred b. 1902
Painter and illustrator, born in Darlington, he studied art at the Allan-Frazer Art College in Arbroath. He designed posters for the LNER and LMS, and illustrated books.

LAMBERT Elinor fl. 1920-1930
Wood engraver, and wife of Richard Lambert, who ran the Stanton Press at Wembley Hill. She illustrated a number of private press books, some for her husband.

MACK Hilda Muriel b. 1895
Painter and etcher. Lived in Liverpool. Sometimes catalogued as Hilda Muriel Watkinson her maiden name. Studied at the Slade and Colarossi’s Paris.

MACKlE Helen Madeleine fl. 1921-1936 d. 1957
She studied at the Lambeth School of Art and lived in London, working for The Bystander, The Graphic and The Queen magazines. She had exhibitions at the Paris Salon and at leading galleries in London, including SWA and Walker Gallery, Bond Street. She also and designed posters for the Southern Railways.

MADDISON John c. 1875- c. 1925
Painter who lived in Middlesborough Cleveland. Studied at South Kensington School of Art and RCA. Became an art teacher in Middlesborough.

Painter of watercolour landscapes and designer of wallpapers and textiles. He showed at the RA, RBA and at Baillies Gallery, London.

NICHOLSON Greer 1873-1955
Liverpool based painter who studied at RCA. Member of the Liver Sketching Club.

NIXON Job 1891-1938
Born Stoke-on-Trent. Studied Slade and Royal College of Art and British School in Rome. Known mainly for his etchings. Taught etching at South Kensington. Hung 36 times RA and in collection at Tate Gallery.

NORRIS Laurence
Rome Scholar in Painting 1936. Studied Beckenham School of Art and RCA. Taught at Beckenham and later Ravensbourne College of Art.

Painter, studied at Exeter School of Art and later at Winchester. Exhibited at Norwich Gallery, Norfolk Institute of Art and Design, 1993.

OGDEN Agnew J.T. b. 1868
Painter, who studied at York School of Art, in London and in Paris. Taught at the York School of Art before becoming Head at Wellington Art School and Tiverton School of Arts and Crafts.

ORD Gillian b. 1958
Painter, born in Middlesbrough. Worked as painter in residence at Humberside College of Higher Education, 1984.

Painter of portrait miniatures, born in Bedford née Sharpin. Studied at the Slade. Exhibited many works at the RMS and RA.

PALMER Gerald c. 1887
Painter of landscapes, who lived in Corbridge Northumbria and London. Exhibited many works in Walker’s Gallery London. Exhibitions LON NE RA RO .

PARK James Chalmers b. 1858
Painter and etcher of British game birds. Studied at Leeds College of Art. Lived in Leeds for many years. Still exhibiting in 1930.

Painter, studied at Beckenham Art School and Brighton College of Art. Travelled in Africa. First solo exhibition at the AIA Gallery, London, 1951.

QUENNEVILLE Chantal fl. 1922-1926
A painter in oils and watercolours of still-lifes, figures and landscapes, she exhibited mainly with the LG and once at the Redfern Gallery.

QUICK Hilda M. fl. 1930-1960
Wood engraver, bird subjects who showed at St George’s Gallery, London.

RAINEY William 1852-1936
Painter and illustrator studied at the RCA and RA Schools. Elected RI in 1891. Exhibited at RA, RBA, RI and elsewhere. Illustrated many boys stories including Teddy Lester's Schooldays by John Finnemore, 1914.

RAMSAY Eleanor fl. 1888-1921
painter of landscapes who lived at Beaumaris, Anglesey. She exhibited many works at the Ridley Gallery, London, RA and the SWA of which she was an Associate Member.

RAMSAY Elizabeth E. fl. 1884-1908
Landscapes and flowers in oil and w/c. Lived in Beaumaris Anglesey Gwynedd. Sister to Eleanor *and Frances *and daughter of Mrs E.G.Ramsay . Also lived in London. Exhibitions NE NW RA RO

RAMSAY Frances L.M. fl. 1885-1921
Landscapes flowers and portraits in oil. Lived in Beaumaris Anglesey Gwynedd. Sister to Eleanor *and Elizabeth *and daughter of Mrs E.G.Ramsay . ASWA Also lived in London. Exhibited many works at the Ridley Gallery London and the SWA. Exhibitions LON NE NW RA RO G.

SALMON John Cuthbert 1844-1917
Landscape painter who lived in Llandudno, Wales. Noted for paintings of North Wales. Exhibited many works at theRA, RCamA and the Walker Gallery.

SALTONSTALL J.W. b. 1873
Painter who hailed from the Halifax area of Yorkshire. Studied at Halifax Blackpool Preston and Doncaster Schools of Art.

TANNER Arthur fl.c.1908-1915
Very little is known about this artist except that he lived in Lamorna, Cornwall, and painted landscapes of that area. He was a friend of artists Lamorna Birch and Henry Scott Tuke and used to travel abroad regularly. He disappeared during the First World War.

TARRANT Percy fl. 1881-1930 d. 1934
Childrens book and magazine illustrator, father of Margaret Tarrant. He exhibited at the RA, RBA and elsewhere.

TAWSE Sybil fl. 1900-1940
Painter and decorative illustrator who studied at Lambeth School of Art and at the R.C.A. where she won won silver and bronze medals. She exhibited at the RA, RI and RP and illustrated several books including Charles Lamb's Essays of Elia in 1910 and Dumas The Count Of Monte Christo in 1920.

UPTON Florence Kate d. 1922
Painter and illustrator, born in New York. She studied at the National Academy of Design under Kenyon Cox and also in Paris and Holland. She exhibited at the Nantes International Exposition in 1905 and lived in London for many years. Whilst there she showed at the RA, Fine Art Society and elsewhere. She is best remembered for her series of children's books which she illustrated and created called the Golliwogg Books written between 1899-1905. She died in England.

WADE A. Cecil
Illustrator, trained at Sunderland School of Art and at King Edwards Art School, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Solo exhibition at Gateshead Art Centre, 1976. Long time member of London Sketch Club. A noted calligrapher he wrote many articles for Artist Magazine during the 1930’s.

WAKELY Shalagh b.
Painter and sculptor, showed at Gimpels, Collection Arts Council of Great Britain.

WALKER Hilda Annetta fl. 1904-1937
Landscapes and figure painter and occasional sculptor. Lived in Mirfield near Huddersfield. Studied at Leeds College of Art under Gilbert Foster. Did many Yorkshire Dales paintings. Exhibited extensively.

Sculptor, studied at Bede College, University of Durham. Exhibited at The Royal Academy. Lived and works in Bishop Auckland, County Durham and was a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors
