MONNINGTON Sir Thomas 1902-1976

Painter,
born in London. He attended the Slade School of Art, 1918-22 where he studied
decorative painting winning a scholarship to British School at Rome 1922-5.
Painted a mural for St. Stephen's Hall in the Palace of Westminster, 1927
and also for the Bank of England in 1932. In 1931 he was elected an Associate
of the Royal Academy eventually becoming its President in 1966. At the outbreak
of the Second World War, he joined the design team of the Ministry of Camouflage
and was appointed an Official War Artist. His teaching career spanned many
years and he held positions at the RA Schools, Camberwell School of Art and the Slade. By 1960 he had begun to produce
abstract paintings and he is generally recognised as one of the finest English
