Framed
Signed & numbered 18/45

Painter and printmaker, born in London. He studied at Chelsea Polytechnic, 1921-23, and RCA, 1923-25. As a student Burra revealed a talent for popular illustration and the bizarre aspects of everyday existence. Cinema, dance and music halls and low life bars were constant sources of inspiration. 1930 first solo exhibition at Leicester Galleries. Much of his work of the 1930's celebrated the popular culture of Harlem and Mexico, and later reflected his distress at the Spanish Civil War. Member of Unit One and exhibited in the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition. From the late 1950's onwards he became increasingly interested in landscape and still life. Retrospective exhibition held at Hayward Gallery, London, 1985. See catalogue of this exhibition published by Arts Council of Great Britain.

The block for this woodcut was rediscovered in 1971 having laid unused since the late 1920's. These were reprinted under the direction of Alex Postan in 1971 with Burra's full knowledge and approval.

Sculptor, born in Douglas, Isle of Man. He attended Douglas School of Art 1947 and the RA Schools where he studied painting 1948-1952. Winning the coveted Rome Scholarship he spent nearly two years travelling around Italy. He destroyed nearly all of his paintings executed during this period but continued to work as a painter until 1959. Having acquired welding skills in 1960 he turned to steel sculpture. His paintings and drawing were exhibited widely including the one illustrated here. This was shown in 1960 at his first solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, London. In 1964 he began teaching at the RCA. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1974. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Arts Council, the Manx Museum, CAS, Leicestershire Education Authority, National Gallery of South Australia, Museum of Modern Art, São Paulo.

This picture was exhibited at the Redfern Gallery at one of the artist's earliest solo exhibitions. Please note that there is slight damage on the top right hand corner as can be seen.
