"G Pro-Whip"Antenna

The G Whip base vertical antenna comprises of a "Pro Whip ™" telescopic pole (Fibre Glass Multi Section Vertical) with an internal special flexible wire up the middle and helically loaded section, the bottom end of the wire is connected to a “Transformer” or unbalanced network. A counterpoise is used and is also connected to the unbalanced network. “A” is the antenna connection, and “C” is the counterpoise. Near perfect resonance is 6.9/7.1 MHz and the antenna can be matched (with any standard ATU “Z” match/Transmatch etc) from 3.5MHz to 28MHz with a maximum VSWR of 2 to 1. (No resistors are used in this antenna).

New components for old designs. This is a great simple antenna that gets you on the air in minutes. It is used by the Military who require a broadband antenna and they have used it for years, but now it is improved. The secret is in the box! A VERY high permability toroid core is used and the matching unit is known as an unbalanced to unbalanced transformer (not Balun), these new technology cores offer a much better response than the Micro-metals and Amidon cores (plots of this will follow, but we bought all 3 types for tests and have over 30 years of professional transformer/balun building, Minns/CTS rf units, remember the name). The core winding is done using Teflon/PTFE silver plated wire, each unit is “tweaked” to offer a minimum of -18/21db return loss and in some cases -32db return loss! Professional network analysers are used before potting the matching unit for total waterproofing to standards required by MIL810F along with stainless steel hardware for the wires. It is also a Superb antenna for general HF listening (and now used by the listening & monitoring services in the UK) using a low cost tuner. It will not work as good as a full size dipole, but for restricted gardens and portable operation you will have hours of fun with it. What you get here is a copy of the professional version which costs many hundreds of pounds, plus you are assured of people who know what they are talking about. Professionals by name............................http://www.ctsminns.co.uk/hf_series.html

These units are made to a high specification as all G Whip products are, the matching unit is not the carp you see on Ebay.

Size: 1.15 Mtrs retracted, approx 8/9 mtrs extended including helical. Weight under 1 Kg.

Sample VSWR plots with NO tuner and mounted at ground level. Sweep @ 15Mhz centre +/- 14 Mhz. Range = 1 Mhz to 29 Mhz

50.110 1.6/1........28.500 1.2/1............24.900 2.6/1............21.250 2/1.........18.138 1.3/1............14.200 1.55/1.........10.105 2/1..........7.050 1.2/1..........3.725 2.5/1

Bandwidth on: 7Mhz all band.

It is suggested that an antenna matching device is used capable of the output power being used.

Set up:

Unwind the wires on the spool, unscrew the base and also remove the bung from the top of the tubes, pull the top rod out of the tubes, pull hard so that they lock, continue to do the same with all tubes, then simply drop the whole mast on an earth spike, ground spike, or strap the base tube to a fence, or buy the optional 3 way guying system so that you can ground mount the mast in a field etc. Connect the antenna down-lead to the supplied matching unit (the Kevlar green wire) to "A", and the counterpoise wire to "C". Connect up your coax and off you go...............simple......................as ABC.

What they say:

Hi Geoff, I've been comparing the performance with my trap dipole. Where the whip really scores is that I can put it down the garden away from the electrical noise . The difference on receiving is astonishing!.........73 de Tony G4HHZ

Allan, G7VQV comments: "had a good afternoon with it, was up at Cheese Foot Head, Nr Winchester on the road to Petersfield, and was working IOM, Denmark, Holland, Portugal etc on 20, 40 and 80 mtrs, and did hear the USA...............thanks Geoff.............You made my day"............PS: and today (29/8/2009) I worked the US and lots lots more..............checkout Allans website here
