We are a small, lively, Pentecostal church located in the village of Goldthorpe, in South Yorkshire.
Goldthorpe is located 7 miles from Doncaster, 7 miles from Barnsley, and 7 miles from Rotherham, so we
are right in the centre of the area.

We see the main purpose of our church to be to worship God, to encourage and strengthen each other in the
Christian life, and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We firmly believe that Jesus Christ is the only way
to a right relationship with God, and our desire is to show this to everyone that we can.  If you would like to
know why we believe that Jesus Christ is the only way, then please scroll down to the 'Why Jesus?' section.

Within our site you will find details of our church, what we believe, and what we do each week.  There is
also a message from our Pastor which will be changed approximately every month.

The site is a new venture for the church and so we ask you to bear with us as we perfect the technique.  If
you have any constructive comments, we would be pleased to hear from you, please E-Mail us.

FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS

THE BIBLE: We believe the Bible, as originally given, to be without error, the fully inspired and infallible Word of God and the supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

THE TRINITY: We believe that the Godhead exists coequally and co-eternally in three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that these three are one God, sovereign in creation, providence and redemption.

THE SAVIOUR: We believe in the true and proper deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His real and complete humanity, in His sinless life, in His authoritative teaching, in His substitutionary and atoning sacrifice through His blood shed,  in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, in His heavenly intercession and His second advent to receive His Church.

THE HOLY SPIRIT: We believe in the deity of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son and the necessity of His work in conviction of sin, repentance, regeneration and sanctification, and that the believer is also promised on enduement of power as the gift of Christ through the baptism in the Holy Spirit with signs following. Through this enduement the believer is empowered for fuller participation in the ministry of the Church, its worship, evangelism and service.

MANKIND: We believe in the universal sinfulness of all men since the Fall, rendering man subject to God's wrath and condemnation.

SALVATION: We believe in the necessity for salvation of repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by which the sinner is pardoned and accepted as righteous in God's sight. This justification is imputed by the grace of God because of the atoning work of Christ, is received by faith alone and is evidenced by the Fruit of the Spirit and a holy life.

THE CHURCH: We believe in the spiritual unity and the priesthood of all believers in Christ and that these comprise the universal Church, the Body of Christ.

THE MINISTRY: We believe in the ministries that Christ has set in His Church, namely, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, and in the present operation of the manifold Gifts of the Holy Spirit according to the New Testament.

THE ORDINANCES: We believe in the baptism of believers in water in obedience to the command of Christ and the commemoration of Christ's death by the observance of the Lord's Supper until His return.

THE COMMISSION: We believe that the Gospel embraces the needs of the whole man and that the Church is therefore commissioned to preach the gospel to the world and to fulfil a ministry of healing and deliverance to the spiritual and physical needs of mankind.

THE COMING KING: We believe in the personal, physical and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to reign in power and glory.

THE FUTURE STATE: We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in the final judgement of the world, the eternal conscious bliss of the righteous and the eternal conscious punishment of the wicked.

PASTOR'S PAGE

Pastor Dave Wood
As we move towards the year 2000 and the celebration of the new millennium, I realise that this date and this event only really mean anything to the Christian countries and people.  For those of other faiths and beliefs, the number of the year is different, depending from where they started counting.  However, it is a fact that the whole of the commercial world uses the Christian calendar. It is also a fact that, all over the earth, the start of the new millennium will be celebrated.  But what is the millennium celebrating and why is it significant to most of the world?

This date is marking 2000 years since the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of the Christian faith. Pope Gregory introduced the present calendar in 1582 and, as the Roman Catholic Church was probably the most influential body in the Western world at that time, this calendar soon became universally accepted.  Although later research has suggested that the date of the birth of Jesus Christ might be up to 6 years different from that which Gregory calculated, his original date continues to be the base from which we calculate the years.  The accuracy of the date is does not matter too much.  What is important is the event that the date marks, which is the birth of Jesus Christ.

To Christians, this is one of the most important events in the whole of human history.  It marks the time when Almighty God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, sent His Son to live among ordinary people and offer them a new way of life.  Jesus Christ, who was and always will be God, left behind all of that which was God and came to earth to live as an ordinary human being.  He came to show that there is a better way to live and that it is perfectly possible for human beings to live that life.
He did not come to earth as a king or powerful ruler.  He did not suddenly appear as a fully-grown man.  He was not born in a palace, or rich man's home.  He was born of poor parents, in an unfashionable part of the Roman Empire, in a stable among the animals.  He came that way so that everyone of us can identify with Him and so that we can be sure that, no matter how we start out in life, there is hope in Jesus Christ for everyone.

However, it is essential that we realise that the birth of Jesus Christ is important to every one of us, and not just to Christians.  For Jesus Christ came into the world for all mankind, for anyone and ever one who will believe in Him and in what He offers to all of us.  The Christian Bible tells us:

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(John 3:16)

If you want to know more about how Jesus Christ can change your life, scroll down to the  'Why Jesus?' section below.

As the birth of Jesus Christ was such an important and unique event in the history of the world, it is appropriate that the passage of time should be marked in relation to it.  It was indeed the event about which all of history pivots, and it is the obvious point from which to calculate the calendar.  So the millennium is more than just a chance to celebrate and have a good time.  It is also a time to remember what God did all those years ago.

HISTORY OF GOLDTHORPE ELIM PENTECOSTAL CHURCH

The church was founded by a group of Christians in the 1955.  At first they met in the local Army Cadet Drill Hall but eventually, in 1964, they built the present church in Beever Street, Goldthorpe.  They were known as the Goldthorpe Pentecostal Church, and they were an independent church until in 1967 they entered into association with the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance, which is an international Pentecostal movement.  Since then the church has maintained a Pentecostal presence in Goldthorpe and the surrounding areas and is very much involved in serving the local community.  On 10th May 1997 an extension to the church was opened and this effectively doubled the size of the building.  The extension enables the church to offer a better venue for community activities such as the youth meetings and the Mother and Toddlers etc.

The church offers a warm welcome to all who prefer a lively, Spirit led style of worship, together with a firm Bible based ministry.

Why Jesus?

robot

When God created Man, He created him for one purpose. The Westminster Confession tells us that the purpose of man is to "glorify God and to enjoy Him forever."
However, God did not create man as a Robot but gave him the privilege of being able to choose whether he served and worshipped Him, or whether he went his own way.  God gave man this ability to choose because He wanted man to serve Him out of love and choice and not out of instinct and blind obedience.  Knowing that man could choose to reject Him, God made provision, before the creation of the Universe, for that possibility.

Man did choose to reject God and to follow his own desires.  When he did this, he cancelled out the very reason for his existence.  Man's lifestyle separated him further and further from God, saddened God greatly, and made Him regret making man at all.

"The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that He had made man on the earth, and His heart was filled with pain."
(Genesis 6:5-6)

Man offended and grieved God in everything he did, this is what the Bible calls SIN.  That sin condemned man to die

"For the wages of sin is death"
(Romans 6:23)

Sin is the universal state of all mankind

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"
Romans 3:23.
crucifixion
Then God put into action the provision He had made before creation.  He sent His only Son, part of the Divine Godhead, to live as a  man, fully human, but without sin.
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-- yet was without sin."
Hebrews 4:15.

That man was Jesus Christ and He chose to die in the place of sinful man. The innocent taking the place of the guilty.  Through His death on the Cross of Calvery, the death sentence on man can be lifted, and man can again have Eternal life.

If you wish to be right with God, then you must start again, with Jesus Christ in your life.  The Bible says your must be 'born again'. You can do this by doing 4 things.

First

Acknowledging that you are guilty of choosing your own way rather that God's way, that you offend God by your self-centredness, and that you do not deserve to live in His Holy Presence.  In other words, that you are a sinner.

Second

By accepting that, in His love for all men, God allowed His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in your place.

Third

By telling God that you are sorry for your sin, asking for His forgiveness, and promising to serve Him forever.

Fourth

By accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life, to guide and direct you in the lifestyle that will please God.

If you wish to do that, if you wish to be right with God, then pray the following prayer.  If you do this, and really mean it with all your heart, God will accept you, you will be 'born again', and you will be a Christian.
prayer

Lord Jesus, I recognise that I have offended God by going my own way and ignoring Him. I am sorry for the way I have been living and I want to live a life that pleases God. I know that You can forgive my sins and give me Eternal life and so I ask You to take control of my life and make me the kind of person You want me to be.

If you have prayed that prayer, and really want to turn your life around and follow Jesus Christ, then you have been accepted by God and you are a Christian. Please Email us and let us know, and then we can pray for you.   If you would like some free literature to help you in your new Christian life, then please ask us and we will be delighted to send some to you.
