News of a two week visit to Bethany 6th to the 18th May
(preliminary report made Saturday 18th May)
On Sunday the 6th May, Graham Pountain, Tracey Pearson and Rachel Hill set off for the Bethany
project. They were met by Fares on Monday the 7th May and were at Bethany by about 7.30pm that
evening after having done some shopping for much needed supplies in Mwanza.
Everyone was well - a few minor problems with the electrics - the first night we needed our torches but
the following day it was fixed. The syphon is working OK but the inverter that powers the pumps seems
like it might have a few problems - it doesn't always come on even when it is very sunny.
On Saturday the 12th May Grace went to stay with her mum at Magu until she has had her baby and
then she will stay a little longer until she is fully recovered. This means that Tracey will be helping out
with the book work - keeping everything in order. Tracey is also helping the younger children with their
education. Rachel has taken on responsibility for helping with the Clinic. A new stock system has been
added and Rachel will see if it works. Both Tracey and Rachel are trying to help with the food and
menus. More news and photos to follow
News as at Thursday 24th May 2001.

Fax from Tanzania Saturday 26th May 2001 08:00hours
The following are extracts from a fax received from the team at Bethany.
'Please order the inverter - it unfortunately appears to be required, we've had to use the diesel pump
this last week.'
'The store is finished...everything is now in buckets (with lids) away from those nasty cockroaches'.
'The carpenter has finished doing the benches in the Pumzika room'
'The children are in the process of end of term exams and will be beginning a months hols 1st June,
so Rachel, Tracey and Fares are trying to think of lots of fun and exciting things we can do'
'Rachel has revolutionised the Clinic and you would not believe the ease and speed with which
Tracey has tackled the wages and accounts!!!! ( okay so that's a little bit of an exaggeration but we
appear to have managed the months wages and the clinic stock sheet excercise is running
smoothly.)'
'Jessica, Tabaji and Ali's reading is really beginning to improve, which is more than can be said for
Rachel and Tracey's Kiswahili. However on the positive side their lessons with Boniface seem to be
teaching them a lot about the English languarge'.

The inverter is a piece of electronic equipment which converts the 12 volt solar panels energy into
3phase AC curent needed to power the water pump. It appears it may have suffered from a lightning
strike and needs replacing. Brian hopes to take one out with him when he goes on 10th June.

Future trips.
June 10th to June 25th. Brian Bancroft.
July 22nd to Agust 11th. Hilary Murphy, Sharon Gerrard and Faith Turner. Hilary returns to help in
the Clinic. Sharon is interested in the childrens welfare and education. Faith is visiting for the first
time and is a nurse who may see the possibilities of staying longer term.
